Question:
I have a trailer mount with a 2inch ball, 1inch diameter shaft. I need to get a 1 7/8inch ball for a smaller trailer. Can I use a ball with 3/4inch shaft or will I need one with 1inch shaft to exactly fit mount? My mount is Curt # 45036. Thanks.

The shank diameter of the trailer ball needs to match the hole diameter of your ball mount, which can be accomplished a few different ways. You could use a ball with a 3/4 inch shank like # 19256 as long as you used a reducer bushing like part # C21100. Another option would be to use a 1-7/8 inch ball with a 1 inch diameter shank like part # 19260.
What might be the best option would be to use an interchangeable ball system like the Convert-A-Ball # 903B. This system includes a 1 inch diameter shank that will stay bolted to the ball mount permanently, with 1-7/8 and 2 inch trailer balls that can be easily removed without using tools. That means you won't need to torque down the trailer ball each time you switch to a different ball size.
