Adding Electric Brakes to 1995 StarCraft Pop-Up Trailer

Published 09/17/2015

Question:

Good morning. I am wanting to install electric brakes on my 1995 Starcraft popup. It has the four bolt mounting flange already, but no brake assembly. I took the bearings out to determine what size hub assembly I needed. The inner bearing was marked L68149. The outer bearing was too warn to see the markings. Based upon this, I am thinking that I can use the etrailer Hubs and Drums - AKHD-545-35-K. I would match this with the Dexter Trailer Brakes - AKEBRK-35R-SA and AKEBRK-35L-SA. Would this be correct, or should I manually measure the outer bearing to make sure it is the correct size? The washer looked a little worn as well. Do you have a part number for a new washer? Also, what grease do you recommend with these parts? Thank you.

You could try pulling the other hub, to see if you can read the bearing on the other side. If your inner bearing is L68149, there's a good chance the outer is a L44649, but you can confirm that by using a digital caliper like part # PTW80157 to measure the inside diameter of the bearing. If it's 1.063 inches, you've confirmed it to be an L44649. If that's the case, and your wheel bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2, the # AKHD-545-35-K hub/drum would be a good choice. The self adjusting # AKEBRK-35L-SA and # AKEBRK-35R-SA brake assemblies would be an excellent choice. If your outer bearing doesn't have an inside diameter of 1.063, please get back with me.

For a tang washer, use # 5-101 or for a D-washer, use part # 5-23. Our install technicians like the LMX red grease, part # L11390 for a 14 oz cartridge.

I've linked you to an FAQ article on trailer brakes that you might find helpful.
