2012 Ford Explorer Questions and Answers

  • Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Rack that Can Tilt with Bikes On it for a 2012 Ford Explorer
  • The issue with certain racks not being able to tilt with bikes attached is an issue with the racks themselves and not the vehicles. Ground clearance is typically not the problem but it is rack design and what racks are rated for that limits its abilities. You may end up damaging a rack and/or the bikes if you tried to tilt the rack down with the bikes attached. Some racks will allow you to tilt them with bikes loaded. For example the Thule T2, # TH916XTR, which is a platform style rack will

  • Ball Mount Recommendation for a 2012 Ford Explorer with Factory Trailer Hitch
  • It sounds like your 2012 Ford Explorer has a Class II trailer hitch which would be a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. I have included a link that shows the differences in receiver sizes. Class II trailer hitches can be rated as high as 3,500 pounds depending on the vehicle so we will have ball mounts that will work with a 3,000 pound capacity. Normally on a Class II trailer hitch you need to use the ball mount specified by the hitch manufacturer. If Ford does not provide that information you will

  • Comparing Westin Step Bars for a 2012 Ford Explorer
  • Other than being black and having the same diameter there are not a lot of similarities between # 21-3605 and # 22-5025-1975. Bars # 21-3605 measure 82 inches long and # 22-5025-1975 has bars that are 75 inches long. They are also 2 different bar styles. Bars # 21-3605 are a 90 degree style. This means that they are U-shaped like you see in the picture. Bars # 22-5025-1975 are straight bars. This means that the ends of the bars do not curve in towards the vehicle like the U-shaped bars.

  • Is a Weight Distribution System is Needed to Tow a 3700 lb Trailer with a Ford Explorer
  • Weight distributing systems should be used any time the trailer weighs more than 50 percent of the vehicle's weight. A weight distribution system will transfer the load sitting on the rear axle to all axles of the vehicle and trailer. This will allow you to tow with your trailer and vehicle level which will greatly improve your ride quality and performance. I have attached an article that explains weight distribution for you to check out. The most important thing to consider when choosing a

  • Base Plates Compatible with Roadmaster Eagle Tow Bar for 2012 Ford Explorer
  • The correct base plates for your Explorer will depend on how the vehicle is equipped. The Roadmaster # 4427-1A will work for you if your Explorer does NOT have the EcoBoost motor. If you have the EcoBoost motor, you would need to go with a Blue Ox base plate, part # BX2632 and the Blue Ox base plate to Roadmaster tow bar adapter, part # BX88151. The website we use to confirm the towability of a given vehicle does not have any information about the 2012 Explorer model. They state that t

  • Roadmaster Base Plate Kit Recommendation for a 2013 Ford Explorer Limited 4x4
  • You would want the Roadmaster XL Base Plate Kit # 4427-1A that you referenced as a base plate kit for your 2013 Ford Explorer Limited. I checked with Roadmaster and it is confirmed to fit your vehicle. I did some checking and it looks like if you have an AWD model your vehicle is tow-able as is, but if you have a 4-cylinder 2WD model you will not be able to flat tow your vehicle. You will want to check your owners manual to confirm this also and see if their are any other restrictions for you

  • Differences Between Available Trailer Wiring Harnesses for 2012 Ford Explorer
  • You can use the Tow Ready # 118540 with no problems, as long as your Explorer is equipped with the connector shown in the photo I provided. The signals used at this connection point are already converted, so no additional converter is needed. This connection is circuit protected by existing fuses, so there is no risk involved with using this harness. The Curt harness that uses the converter attaches directly behind the tail lights, at which point the signals are not converted, which is why th

  • Is the Pilot Brake Light Hitch Cover # CR-007 Suppose to Flash When Right Turn Signal is Applied
  • On a hitch cover like the Pilot Brake Light Hitch Cover, part # CR-007, that uses just the green and white wires, the right turn signal is flashing because the hitch cover is using the right turn signal/brake circuit which is a combined circuit. This will happen on a hitch cover that only uses the two wires. However, Pilot does make a cover that will not blink when you turn on the signals. It is the Pilot Brake Light Hitch Cover, part # CR-007A. It has a converter in line with the wiring that
