Fifth Wheel Base Rail Kit Installation - 2015 Ford F-350 Super Duty

Today on our 2015 Ford F350 Super Duty Crew Cab, we're going to be installing the Reese Quick Install Custom Base Rails and Installation Kit for Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitches, part number RP50073-58. Here's what our Reese Quick Install Custom Base Rails look like installed in the vehicle. In addition to the base rails, we've also installed the Reese R20 Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch, part number RP30867. While today we have the R20 Fifth Wheel Hitch installed in our rails, these base rails are compatible with several different brands of hitches. We're going to first begin with removing the rear tires. This is not necessary, but it will give us a little more working room, as well as allow you to see things a little bit easier during the installation. Next, we're going to lower down the spare tire as well. While this is not necessary, again it'll give yourself a little more working room and it's also going to allow you to see things a little bit better. Next, we're going to go up into the bed of the vehicle and we're going to take one of the two rails.

Curt Fifth Wheel C16546 Review

Today we're going to review part number 16546. This is the Curt Q24 Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch, with the Curt R24 slider. It's a dual jaw design with a 24,000 pound weight capacity. For demonstration purposes I do have it mounted on some base rails and the mounting bracket to give you an idea what it looks like in the vehicle. But the base rails and the mounting bracket are sold separately. This is a two jaw locking system right here. It provides a 360 degree jaw to king pin contact. It will give you less rattle, more security then the slide bar models. On the very back here, I'm going to show you in a minute when I turn it around here, it has a three point color-coded indicator system.

The head on this is a unique spherical axial bearing which allows easy pivoting of the hitch head.

Fifth Wheel Questions and Answers

  • Installing Above-Bed Rail Mounted 5th Wheel Hitch on a 2015 F350 W/ Ford Tow Prep Package
  • You'll just need a simple adapter, part # RP30156. The adapter will attach into the pucks in the truck bed, and the hitch will mount to the adapter just like it would to bed mounted rails. The adapter is compatible with the Reese Elite underbed rail system or the OEM 5th wheel prep package offered by Ford. If you'd care to see a product demonstration video showing the adapter in use, click the provided link.

  • 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch for a 2015 Ram 2500 Short Bed with Factory Prep Package
  • For a 5th wheel hitch that fits directly into the factory 5th wheel prep package in your 2015 Ram 3500 you will need B&W hitch # BWRVK3600. Or you can use Reese hitch # RP30160. Since neither of these hitches are sliders you would want to add a Sidewinder pin box to the trailer to be able to make tight turns. Sidewinders only fit specific pin boxes so I would need to know the manufacturer and model of the pin box itself to determine if there is one that will fit. This information is...

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch for a 2014 Ram 2500 Crew Cab with 6 Foot Bed w/o Factory Rails
  • Thanks for sending us a picture of your 5th wheel trailer! The 5th wheel hitch I recommend is the Curt sliding 5th wheel # C16521 because of the double jaw and a full floating 360-degree jaw to king pin contact. Having a double jaw hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin. It's also cushioned which provides you a smooth ride! The gross towing weight of this Curt sliding 5th wheel hitch # C16521 is 16,000 pounds and the vertical load limit...

  • Slider 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch for 2014 Ford F-250/F-350 Short Bed with OEM Prep Package
  • If you want a 5th wheel hitch that fits directly in the 5th wheel prep package on your 2014 Ford F-250 short bed you can use Reese Elite Series hitch # RP30144. It is rated for 18,000 pounds and has a travel distance of 10 inches. The other option would be to use adapter # RP30156 and a hitch that fits above the bed rails in the adapter such as # RP30083 for a 20K or # RP30075 for a 16K. I have linked some videos for you to review as well.

  • 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Options for a 2014 Ford F-350 Short Bed
  • Starting with 5th wheel installation kits for your 2014 Ford F-350 short bed there are universal and custom kits. The difference is that a custom kit will require no drilling into the truck frame to install the brackets. A universal kit will require drilling. For a universal kit we have # RP30035. For custom above the bed install kits there are more options. You could use # RP50073-58, # C16424-204, or # HT31408-686. For custom below the bed kits you could use Reese kit # RP30126...

  • 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Installation Kit for 2015 Ram 3500 Dually and Reese Hitch
  • As far as fits go the situation was that on Curt kit # C16426-204 they had excluded dually models. But we have installed this kit on a dually model and have been told by Curt recently that it will fit. So if your 2015 Ram 3500 does not have the factory prep package for a 5th wheel hitch, you should be able to use this Curt kit. And your Reese hitch will fit it. But I can tell you that Reese installation kit, # RP50085-58, will fit dually models for sure and your hitch will fit this installation...

  • How to Determine if a Ford F250 Has Rails or Hitch Prep Package for Fifth Wheel Towing
  • If the truck bed of your Ford F250 has 4 pucks like what is in the picture I attached then your truck has the underbed hitch prep package and the Reese Elite Series Pre-Assembled 5th Wheel Hitch w/ Slider # RP30144 would be the correct hitch for your truck. • Determining Proper Height of Fifth Wheel Hitch in Truck Bed
  • Here's how to figure out the hitch height you'll need. Jack the trailer up so that it's level. Measure the distance from the underside of the pin box to the ground. Then, measure the height of the floor of the truck bed above the ground. The difference between these two measurements is the height at which you'd want your hitch. You'll want at least six inches of clearance between the top of the bed sides and the underside of the trailer loft. For a 6-3/4 inch bed, you have two options...

If the trailer you plan on towing has either a Sidewinder or Reese Revolution pin box installed on it you could use the # BWRVK3600. Otherwise, you would need a slider hitch to have clearance for tight turns. If you don't have a Sidewinder or Revolution pin box you can replace your current pin box with a Sidewinder so that you could go this route. Sidewinders are...

  • Recommendations to Reduce Chucking with a 5th Wheel Towing Setup that Uses Husky 5th Wheel
  • What you are describing is called, "chucking." This is a pretty common problem with fifth wheel hitches. The sound and feeling you are experiencing is actually from the play that is between the jaws of the hitch and the king pin of your trailer. Some hitches just happen to have more play, which causes the chucking, than others that fit tighter. The only real solutions are to upgrade to a hitch that is cushioned and has a jaw system that provides better king pin contact to reduce movement...

  • Is the Head on Reese Titan 20 5th Wheel Hitch Easily Removable
  • Yes, the head on the Reese Titan 20 # RP30867 is easily removable. I recently was working with one and all you have to do is pull out two large pins under the head and then lift the head off. You could also unbolt the crossbeam support the head sets on but it wouldn't be much lighter that way compared to the whole hitch. This hitch does fit the adapter # RP30154 for Rams with the OEM prep package.

  • What To Consider to Set Fifth Wheel Hitch Height
  • The thing about the hitch height is that it will depend on the trailer. So without having the trailer in front of you there is no way to know exactly what height setting you will need. The goal is to have the trailer sit as level as possible. Until you have the trailer in front of you and can determine what height setting will be needed to tow the trailer level there's no way to know what your ideal height setting would be.

Since different options will give different towing capacities you will still want to check with the Chevy dealer you are shopping at to be 100 percent certain.
