Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2010 Ford F-150

Today on this 2010 Ford F-150 we are going to install a brake controller part number 90885 the Prodigy 2 brake controller. This F-150 has a factory tow package so our connector we are going to plug into is going to be behind the computer port here off towards the center. Maybe but a few inches away at the most. It is stuck into a cap right now so there is a little button that you want to push up and disconnect it. Plug the adapter cord into it and we are going to leave that alone for now. Next we will mount our brake controller to the bottom of the dash and we are going to locate it about right here and we are going to use this bracket that comes with the kit and basically we are going to pull it over to this screw right here and we will just use the screws that came with the kit and drill right into the plastic and it will be just fine. 00:50 more

Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2009 Ford F150

Today we are going to install a Prodigy Brake Controller, part number 90185 on our 2009 Ford F-150, and we are going to use the accompanying brake control adapter and show you how it gets installed. This is a little bit different from previous models. The plug for the brake controller is actually behind this tray right here. What happens is, this panel comes off, and then we get behind the tray - unscrew the tray - and the connection is right behind it. All right, what we are going to do first is go ahead and just take off this panel right here. And it is actually pretty easy. Just give a gentle pull on the bottom and just work your way up. And start on the right-hand side, so that way you can pull it out from underneath this piece here. When you do pull on this, this little panel here will come back toward you, too, and give you a little bit of extra room to pull it out. more

Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2008 Ford F-250 Super Duty

Today on this 2008 Ford F250 Super Duty we will be installing the Prodigy brake controller and adapter plug, part number 90185-3034-P. We are inside the cab of the truck and the first thing we want to do is locate the port we are going to be plugging our adapter into. On these newer F250s they have the option of having the factory installed brake controller in the dash area. Since this does not have one, the plug is actually mounted on the back side of this knockout here. :37 more

Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2003 Ford F250

Just to give you a reference point, this is the top, right here of the gas pedal, so basically its across up on this pillar here. While were here well plug in our brake controller adapter and that will be part # 3035-P. Now we can plug the other end of this into our brake controller after we install the mounting bracket. Next well mark our bracket for positioning, well just hold it up here on this bottom edge where its nice and flat. In this corner right here, well just make a small dot for reference and then well put our first screw there. Afterwards well put our brake controller inside and eyeball it to make sure we get it straight. When we have positioned the way we want it, we ll make our secondary screw install here. Okay at this point we can simply install our adapter cable in then well just mount right here. We have the brake controller installed now, the last thing we do is take the wires and zip tie them into a safe position and all we have to do is test. more

Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2005 Ford Freestar

Today on this 2005 Ford Freestar we are going to install part number 39510, the Voyager brake controller. We are also going to use the ETBC7 kit to install this. And we are going to need an extra bracket and that is going to be part number 18140. The first thing we need to do is go ahead and install the bracket for the 7-pole. And what is going to happen is we are going to install it on the bottom of the hitch, just like this. And then we will go ahead and clamp it in position. We are going to use the clamp that holds everything in place. Then we will take the bracket that comes with the ETBC7 kit and we will just go ahead and bolt it on. What we are going to do is actually just wind this up in electric tape and leave our leads out that we need. We will leave our 4-pole sticking out and we are going to need our brake wire which is going to be blue and our black wire for 12 volt power supply. And then we will just wrap up our purple and white wire. Our white wire is going to go directly to the frame for ground. And then the purple wire is going to be for reverse lights, if it is ever needed. And to our black and blue wire we are going to install a gray cable which has the black and white wires inside of it. What we are going to do is just peel away the gray sheath and stripe our wires back and make our connections. And we are going to go black to black and white to blue. Cover those up with some electric tape. Next we will go ahead and install the loom along the wires like this. 1:36 more

Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2004 Ford F150

If you are throwing around the idea of installing a brake controller or needed one yesterday this video will show you step by step what is required. Many trucks come with a factory provided brake control wiring harness which is usually tucked into the glove compartment. On this video we will demonstrate how to install the Tekonsha Prodigy brake controller using this OEM harness. Since this truck has the tow package the only hardwiring required is between the factory harness and the controller. If you want to eliminate all hardwiring and make installation even faster you can opt to purchase the Tekonsha custom wiring harness if one is available for your vehicle. more

Today on this 2001 Ford F-150 we are going to install part number 90195-3035P. This kit will include the P3 brake controller and the adapter cord that will plug into the truck. Alright, we will start off with our adapter cord first. This is the end that will plug into the port. It is right next to the diagnostic port. And we just snap it into place. Alright, we have it plugged in. Let us go ahead and test the wires and make sure everything is working. Our black wire is going to be our 12 volt power supply. That is good. And red is going to be our stop light switch. OK, and white is going to be ground. And blue we have output to our trailer brakes so we do not have to test that. So it looks like our plug is good. 0:45 more

Today on this 2001 Ford F-150 we are going to install part number 90885-3035P, this includes the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 brake controller with the Ford adapter. On the back of this vehicle we are going to install part number 118242 from Tow Ready. The first thing we need to do is find the port for the brake control package. On this year Ford it is pretty easy, right next to the data port here. Right to the left of it you can see it right here. So our adapter cord we will plug that into the port right here. Now we will plug this other half in the back of the brake controller and now we will find a spot for our bracket. A nice thing about the P2 brake controller is you can mount it vertical so you get more choices in mounting the brake controller itself on different vehicles. 00:52 more

Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 1990 Ford F-150

Today on this 1990 Ford F-150, we are going to install part number ETBC7 and part number 118316 from Tow Ready. So with the ETBC7 kit we are going to install the brake controller part number 5500 from Draw-Tite and it is the activator to the brake controller. First off what we will do is we will start off by installing the 4-pole wiring flat part number 118316 and that will give us a 4-pole to work off of for ETBC7 kit. We are not going to use all of this wire here so what we will do is we will just go ahead and wrap it up next to the harness just to take up the extra slack because this is going to go right to the ETBC7 kit. And what will happen is we will plug this in to the ETBC7 kit which will get mounted onto the bumper. Which we want to install that bracket next. more

Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 1996 Ford Explorer

Today we are going to install part number 90195 from Tekonsha, the P3 Brake Controller. We are also going to install along with it part number ETBC7. And this will all be installed on a 1996 Ford Explorer. To begin our install, we are actually going to start with the rear of our vehicle and then work our way forward. First off, we are going to install our bracket that actually holds our 7-pole in place. There are substitute brackets that you can use that this will go onto and mount onto the hitch tube itself. However, this particular 7-pole does not really work that good you have to get some extra-long screws and make new holes in the bracket. But in this case, it makes things a little easier and probably a little bit nicer. So we will go ahead with this bracket here that comes factory with it. We will drill out a half-inch hole, which will work perfect with the carriage bolt with a half-inch square hole in the bottom of the bumper. And we will end up with the bracket about right there. We have got our bracket in a bench vise and we will go ahead and put in a quarter-inch pilot hole first and follow it with a half-inch bit. We will our bolt into the bumper and then we will go ahead and install our bracket. And then we will put on the nut and then tighten it down and use an extra hand to hold the bracket while you tighten down the nut and bolt. All right, we will go ahead and install our 7-pole into the bracket. more

Diagnosing a Brake Controller Problem - Video

Diagnosing a Brake Controller Problem

Alright, today on this 2009 Ford F-150 we are going to diagnose a brake controller problem. Now we can use these steps on any brake controller that is on the market to verify if it is working or not. Now our brake controller is already telling us that it has an error message. It is flashing an Er on top. Usually it means an internal problem. We tested our trailer so we know it is good. So, it is not that. So first off we will make sure we have a constant 12 volt power supply. We will check the black wire first. OK, we are good there. Now we will try our red wire for our brake signal. OK, that is good there. Now we will try our blue wire and that will be our output. So we should have output on this wire whenever we hit the foot brake or the manual override. OK, we get nothing on the foot brake and nothing on the manual override. So definitely the error is internal and this brake controller does have to be replaced. more

Trailer Brake Controller with Wiring Installation - 2000 Ford F-250 Super Duty

Today on this 2000 Ford F-250 Super Duty we are going to install part number 90885-3035P. The Tekonsha Prodigy P2 brake controller with the adapter cord that will plug into the factory Ford outlet. The first thing we need to do is get access to the port near the panel underneath the steering wheel that we have to temporarily remove. You can simply use a coin to undo the latches. Right here is the port that we need to plug into. That is kind of hard to get the wire harness in there and plug it in so you can use a screwdriver or a trim panel tool like we are using and just pop it up a little bit, get underneath of it and pop it loose so you can get a better angle at it. Take the cord and plug it in and take the cable and route it below and put the panel back into place. 00:55 more

Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2011 Ford Expedition

Today on this 2011 Ford Expedition we are going to be installing the Prodigy P2 brake control kit, part number 90885-3035P. Starting off inside the cab of the Expedition, and the first thing we want to do is locate the brake control port that we are going to be plugging our wiring harness into. And this port is located on the driver side of the vehicle, just below the steering column is this grey open ended plug right here. So with the port located, we can go ahead and take our wiring harness. Go ahead and plug it in. With the harness plugged in, we will want to next determine where we want to mount our brake controller. We want to mount it in a position where it can be easily accessed by the hand of the driver but also does not interfere with normal driving conditions. On this particular vehicle, over here on the right side of the steering wheel, if I follow below right about even with where our port is, the underside of the dash here has a small lip. I believe it is just wide enough for us to actually us as a mounting point. And I am going to be using the more traditional bracket that comes with the Prodigy P2 controller. We can mount it in position just like so. You do want to make sure when you are mounting the brake control bracket that it is mounted in a straight line with the braking of the vehicle. 1:31 more

Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 1999 Ford F250

Today were going to install the Prodigy brake controller from Tekonsha, Part Number 90185, on a 1999 Ford F250, the light-duty version. This will also apply to the same year Ford F150. Were going to start off with this one vehicle that only has a factory 4-pole package on it and does not have the 7-pole in the back. So were going to have to upgrade the 4-pole to make it a 7-pole and then we can install the brake controller up front. The first thing we do is install one of two brackets on the hitch itself so we have a place to mount our electrical connector, and basically were going to be using Part Number 18140 from Tow-Ready. And basically this is one that clamps in place right here. Basically its just a hose clamp that goes around the hitch and back through itself. And then you just tighten it down with a clamp set. You might want to hold the bracket in position while you tighten it down, too. Next were going to install a bracket by a hole in the connector right here. And this comes with the Part Number 37185, and thats a 4-pole to 7- and 4-pole adapter. more

Before we begin our install we need to take down this access panel here to get to the port thats located behind the panel towards the center. Well point that out to you. Inside this cavity here you can see all the wire harnesses and what not, behind this harness is a gray port. Thats the port for the tow package we need to use. Well run it from the inside here out behind this steel here and come back around to the outside. Since this is tight quarters you can take a screw driver and force this up a bit so its facing towards you and its easier to install. Next were going to mount our bracket, were going to use a standard one like so. This vehicle had a brake controller before, so we use the existing holes. The hardware that came with this is a little small so were going to replace it with some number nine screws to take up the holes in the dash already. more
