4 Pole to 5 Pole Trailer Wiring Adapter Installation on a Kia Sedona
Today we're going to show you a popular upgrade. We have here a four pole flat that's been installed on a vehicle. The owner has a boat trailer now and it has a five wire flat. So we're going to convert that four wire to a five wire flat. Our first step we need to do is take off the four pole and then we'll uninstall the bracket and put in the new bracket. It may take some force, but you have to pull to get this out of here. We actually used a rubber mallet to tap it a little bit, now this bracket can come off which we've previously loosened up. Now we'll install our new bracket and it will go in the same spot as before. What we're going to do next is get our four pole ready which we've cleaned out with WD-40 and then we're going to put in some dielectric grease. We'll put that inside here and then we're going to attach our four pole from our adapter inside there.
Now our five pole will get mounted to our adapter here. One thing I like to do when I have it connected since it's semi-permanent is put a zip tie all the way around it so it will never come off. Now we're going to install our five pole. Next we're going to install our lead going to our reverse light. You see it comes in the kit with the other half and we put some dielectric grease in there. Now we'll install those together, then we'll wrap some electrical tape around it since this will be a semi-permanent connection also. What we've down here is zip tie our wire harness together to make it nice and as compact as possible, the next step is to find a place to hide it. If you can hide it behind the bumper if you have room, great. If not, since we don't have much room, we're going to tuck it up underneath the bracket here and zip tie it. Our next step is to run the blue wire up to the reverse light. Now we need to take off our taillight so we can get to our reverse light wire. We have the back of the taillight exposed here, if you look at the front you can tell which one is your reverse light. It's pretty easy to find, in this case it's on the top here and it has two wires. The black one will typically be the ground but double check with your vehicle. We also have a white wire which looks like it's going to be positive. We'll trace our connection down and run our connection right around here. We have some pretty close quarters running the wire through so what we're going to do is take this simple wire here and use anything you want around the house just as long as you can manipulate it and keep it in a straight line.
We'll run it down to the bottom and we'll tie it off to it and pull it back through. We have our wire through, and we'll just wrap our wire around the other wire. Now we can pull it back up through. Like we said earlier we're going to attach to this reverse light lead right about here. We'll use a scotch lock which is a device that connects two wires together and comes with the kit. You simply just slide it on like so, then the other half of the wire is going to get pushed in along side of it. There's a stop on one side so what you want to do is make sure that the wire will go all the way through and go across the metal here. This is so the metal can do its job when you squeeze it with a pair of pliers it will make the connection and cut through the plastic. Give it a tug to make sure you've got it right. Now you snap your cover on and now we're ready to reinstall our light and put our wire connector back in. Now we can reinstall. We'll go ahead and give it the acid test and ground it here and we'll the check the reverse light lead on the outside here. Now we'll put it in reverse and try it and it looks like it works. To recap we used part numbers 20036, the four to five way adapter and 20046, the bracket itself.
