Installation of a Wiring Harness Adapter on a 2001 Dodge Durango

Today, we are going to show you part number 37185 which is an adapter goes from a 4 pole up to a 7 pole and additional 4 pole on the side. What we have here is a Dodge 4X4 Durango. It does not matter what vehicle you are working with as long as you start off with a basic 4 pole flat that is already installed, then you can upgrade from there. A multi-tow adapter does come with its own bracket to mount up with if you do not have an existing bracket, as in our application here, the hitch itself does supply the bracket. For comparison sake, this is the one that comes with the part number, 37189, but we are not going to use this today. We are going to use the factory bracket. I will show you how it mounts up we will mock it up there, and show you what is going on. That will essentially be are finished product when we are done.

To begin our install we have to actually enlarge the holes that fit the screws that come with the multi-tow adapter, basically a 1/4 inch drill bit size, so you have plenty of room to work with. In some instances, you have a bracket that is a little bit too small for our adapter, we have to grind down the little edge, just grind down the one side enough room for it too sink in now we can have it sit flush against the bracket and the screws will be long enough too. Right now we will permanently mount our adapter. What we will do next is get our 4 pole put together we will put some dielectric grease to protect them and zip tie them so that they do not come apart. Next, we will install the ground wire, using a number 10 screw and we will run it right up into the frame next to the spare tire. Next, we will run our purple wire up to the other side slightly behind the taillight. We will go ahead and uninstall our taillight, to get to our wiring harness.

Next we will take out the wiring harness and a taillight so it will be out of the way. With that out of the way, we will test for the reverse light lead. Since this vehicle already has a T-one connector already installed, we are going to use it to trace, on our first try we hit the right one, instead of splicing into the factory harness, we will know it is this wire here that is carrying the reverse light circuit, so we will splice into that without having to worry about breaking into the wiring on the vehicle. With the wire fish through, we will go ahead and disconnect our butt connector we have on here and use a regular splice connector. We will run some dielectric grease in the splice connector, to be on the safe side, the stuff on the outside will be pushed in, which should give a nice safe connection. Next we will test our connection, to make sure we made a good connection. We are good to go, we have power. Now it is the simple task of making the wires nice and neat and put the light back together. For the last step, we will take these wires and zip tie them to the existing harness and they will be place out of the way and you will not have to worry about it. And we are finished.
