Wiring Installation on 2004 Dodge Caravan
First step involved is removing the tail light assemblies, so we'll open the hatch and get started on that. Next step we have to do is pull out the grommet put a slit in it, so we can run our new wires coming out that grommet out through the tail light and back to the wire harness. Now it's the time to go ahead and open the jack storage door, and we'll run our wires towards there. We'll also need to get behind this trim panel, to get that freed up we'll have to take out the threshold. The threshold will be this part here, then we can pull this part out. Opening up that plastic trim panel will give us room to stick our hand in there and help thread the wiring to the jack storage area. We'll go ahead and start routing our wire, we'll start from the outside in between this panel here, and go out through the jack storage and pull the four pole back out. Once you get down to the driver's side harness, yellow will be for the driver's side, we'll pull the original harness through and pull it all back through with the T-1 connector harness that will plug into the tail light. Once you have your harness through the hole, we'll go ahead and re-install the grommet and we'll be ready to go on this side. The green side of the wire harness will go underneath the threshold and back up this panel here. We'll go ahead and thread our wire harness through to the outside here. A good note is that behind the blower here you can actually reach in and around and grab the wire harness that way. While we're here we'll install our ground screw. At this point we can also re-install our passenger side tail light. Next we'll stretch out our wire harness, the part that goes to the trailer, to take out some slack with the green wire as much as we can then we'll zip tie the rest. With the slack taken out we can go ahead and zip tie it to the vehicles original harness and just follow its route. We still have some leftover slack in the wire so we'll go ahead and bundle it up and store next to the wire harness behind the tail light. With the wire harness essentially ran to where it's going to go, we'll go ahead and re-install the interior trim panels. Next thing we'll do is wrap our wire harness up, it's pretty long and comes in two pieces like this, we'll go ahead and electric tape it all the way up to keep a nice neat finish to it and we'll store and not have it tangle. Once you have it taped up, wind it up and store it in here when you're not using it, that's how it usually gets stored. To use the wire harness, go ahead and pull it out and pull it to the outside and close your hatch on it. What happens is that this seal is so thick, when you shut the hatch on it, it's not going to hurt anything. We'll show you how it works in its towing position. Like I said before, pull out the wire and make sure it stays away from the latch, and we'll shut the hatch on it and that will be that. As you can see pulling the wire harness it has plenty of movement as if it ever needs it.
