Installation of a Wiring Harness on a 2007 Nissan Xterra

To give you an idea of what were going to do, typically the modulite and other hardwired modules will get wired usually behind the tail lights. Most of the time you get four functions on the left hand side and the one right turn function on the right hand side. However on Nissans they actually run part of there tow harness here and this is the plug right here. Whats active on it only is the left and right hand turn and the brake signal. The wire is ran for the running light, but is not active. To make it active you have to buy the whole towing kit from the manufacturer OEM. What were going to do is show you a way to work around that where you dont have to run behind the lights and just basically fill in the blanks with the tow package. The First thing we need to do is mount our wiring module. It seems a pretty safe spot would be along the side of the hitch right here.

What we need to do is peel back the covering for the harness to get to our wires. Like I said before there is only two wires that are only active in this tow package, ones going to be the left turn and the other the right turn. Theyre already combined so you dont have to worry about that part. We can turn on the right turn signal, once youre certain thats the correct wire we go ahead and make our connection to that. Well attach it using our scotch lock for our wire. Now well run the rest of our wires over to the other side to make our connections. Now well do the left hand turn signal. Now that we have the two turn signals were going to use the running light circuit. The running light circuit is inactive so well have to get it from a different source. This harness right here actually goes to the license plate lights and they come on with the running lights. Well actually use that as a running source. Since the factory tow package has combined the turn signals and the brake signals together, we dont need a separate circuit for the brake light signal. So when thats not being used, it has to be grounded with the ground. Well put a loop on here and well ground it to the frame. Lets put our ring terminal on our wire here. Now we have to ground both of our wires to the frame. All we need to do next now is this red wire here is a lead that gets run up to the battery that powers the modulite. Once youre done with all your connections here, its a good idea to throw some sealant on the scotch locks with electric tape anything to keep the grime out. Well run our wire from part # 118151 harness kit, lets loop that over for now.

Well strip it and connect it together and pull it back through. Go ahead and apply the sealant of your choice. Before we go to the top of the vehicle well take some time and take our four pole wire and zip tie it to this wire here and leave the excess down by the hitch. Well run our lines following the existing lines going towards the front of the vehicle this will end up laying along side the gas tank or partially over the top. Just take care not to stay away from the exhaust thats further up the vehicle. Well install some zip ties to keep everything in place. After you get past the gas tank try to keep it as close as you can to the frame going up towards the front suspension. Again stay as far away from the exhaust as possible. Behind this heat shield here is some lines, well put our wire behind that and come out in front of the exhaust up here. Theres a piece of the bracket here so were going to use a zip tie to keep our wire attached to that and then it goes straight up to the top of the hood. Well shove some wire up there so we can reach down from the top and pull it up, then well make sure it doesnt hit anything.

Once you have your wire pulled up to the hood make sure conflict with anything like the steering components or the suspension components. Basically you can pull straight up and way from it and zip tie it and work our way across. Well now prepare our fuse holder, you just cut the loop in half and then well put our ends on. Right now we have that done, we can connect to the harness we ran up front. That will lay down there safe and out of the way. Before we make our connection well disconnect the battery completely from the ground. Well go ahead and install our wire. Lets make our connection here at this nice terminal here. All thats left is to seal up our connections and then cut off our zip ties and were good to go. Go ahead and put the ground back on. Now its complete we can install our fuse into the fuse holder. Well take this and zip tie it to our cable here. After testing all functions and double checking all your connections, your wiring harness is ready to go.
