Installation of a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2003 Chevy Malibu
Today we are going to install part number 118002 from Tow Ready. This is a 4 pole wiring flat which we will have to hard wire into this 2003 Chevy Malibu. The first step is to get access to the trunk and wiring harness. Generally most vehicles will have wires around both sides of the vehicle and underneath the carpet. Sometimes they run them all the way to one side and then to the other. So lets get started removing the interior to get to the wiring harness. Now that we found these wires we can use the light testers to find out which wires do what.
We will splice into these wires here and for a ground we will just attach it to the body panel right here. The first thing we are going to do is make our ground connection by screwing it into this body panel right here. We will then use the ground on our test light. Now we will turn on the running lights and use the test light so we know which are the running lights. We will make our first attachment there with this scotch lock. This one has a little stop in there so it will slide over the wire you are going to attach and then snap it over the wire. Make sure you squeeze it with the pliers. Then go ahead and turn the running lights back on just to make sure you have a complete connection. Next we will do the same for the right turn and left turn signals. After you have made sure your connections are complete you can attach the ground wire. Then after you have to test to make sure all the connects are solid make sure your ground is fastened. Turn the running lights back on and use the light tester.
From here you can pull your wire out and just reinstall our carpet. At this point you might want to figure out where and how you are going to run any wires. We are going to run it down behind the carpet right here towards the bottom. To use a harness just go ahead and pull it out and the door seal will be plenty thick enough to move back and forth if needed. You can then shut the hatch on it. Just keep it away from the latch itself and we can just pull out more as we need. Naturally when you are not using it you can keep it back up inside the trunk. There you have it for part number 118002 installed on a 2003 Chevy Malibu.
