Wiring harness installation on a 2006 Ford E350 van
There's no market product that will plug into the factory tow harness, so we'll have to make our own and splice into it. The tow harness is about two or three feet on the frame rail on the drivers side so what we'll do is take this and extend it down out to the frame rail to match up to it. Today we're only going to worry about four pole end, we're not going to install the brakes or the hot lead. We're going to install this on the factory ground on the frame.
Lets go ahead and cut this off and do our splicing and I'll show where to mount it on the wiring harness. We'll go ahead and bound this up with electrical tape to seal off the connections as well as these wires since we're not using them to make it look nice. Now we have our finished harness we'll mount it on the vehicle.
Our first step will be to mount the install bracket. This will mount up here and this hose clamp will mount it in place. Now we need to add the second half of our bracket, mount it right here and our harness will mount in that spot there. You can mount on the top or bottom however you feel like doing it.
Now we'll go ahead and mount our connector. It fits in like so and we'll just bolt it on from there. Now we'll go ahead route our wires through the framework and get them into final position to make our connection. Lets go ahead and install our ground right here with this wire. Now we're going to splice them to our wire harness. This is part of the tow package mentioned earlier. A lot of vans have this, you just have to viciously inspect to see if it does. The best place to look is originally it was tucked up here about two feet back from the end of the frame and it was plugged into a cap.
What we do is unplug the cap and take our wires, cut them to length with a little bit of slack and use scotch locks to splice in behind this. One thing to do to make the scotch locks last longer is and weather tight is go ahead and split them open and give them a dab of dielectric grease.
We've already tested these wires, most tow packages when they come out to the connector the wires match up. We tested them anyway to be sure, and in this case it will be color for color. Make sure you leave some flexibility in the wires, but other than that all that remains is checking the wires on the outside. This concludes this installation.
