Brake Controller Installation on a 2003 Ford F250

To begin our install, we have to gain access to the port. We take off this panel here, this comes down and we have to get back to the corner here to get to the actual plug. Once you have access to it inside, you'll notice we had to take out this bundle assembly here which is not typically found. This is an after market assembly, probably an alarm system. We need to get back to this area here, you can see the gray plug which is the port for the tow package. On the F250 and 350 they'll be up here, however there is one variance on this vehicle here which is this plug was mounted by the firewall. It's a little different and for whatever reason, there's a variant. We'll show you that also. This is the port here which was moved into it's non standard position. This is where we originally found it on the vehicle, we'll go ahead and use that since the alarm system is in the original location.

Just to give you a reference point, this is the top, right here of the gas pedal, so basically it's across up on this pillar here. While we're here we'll plug in our brake controller adapter and that will be part # 3035-P. Now we can plug the other end of this into our brake controller after we install the mounting bracket. Next we'll mark our bracket for positioning, we'll just hold it up here on this bottom edge where it's nice and flat. In this corner right here, we'll just make a small dot for reference and then we'll put our first screw there. Afterwards we'll put our brake controller inside and eyeball it to make sure we get it straight. When we have positioned the way we want it, we 'll make our secondary screw install here. Okay at this point we can simply install our adapter cable in then we'll just mount right here. We have the brake controller installed now, the last thing we do is take the wires and zip tie them into a safe position and all we have to do is test. Now we'll check it, obviously we have two lights going here, one lets us know we have power going to it and the other one is the boost setting. What we do next is use our manual override and it shows ā€œn cā€ which means there is no current going to it, which is obvious we don't have a trailer hooked up to it. Now we'll get our tester and try it out that way. Once you've plugged your test device in, you can see here we have a ā€œcā€ which says it's connected. We'll test the manual override and it spits out voltage. It looks like it's a scale of 1-12, we'll check the dial to make sure it works, move it all the way down and back up. Leave it in the middle at about 6, which is a good way to test to fine tune it to what load situation you have on your trailer. That covers it for your install of part # 90185, the Tekonsha brake controller and the adapter cable 3035-P.
