Installation of a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2007 Mercury Mariner

Today on this 2007 Mercury Mariner we are going to be install Curt wiring harness part number 56067. At the rear of the vehicle we want to locate the ports that we will be plugging our wiring harness into. These ports are located directly behind the tail light assembly on both the driver and passenger side. The first thing we want to do is remove the tail light from the vehicle. You can see on the inboard side we have two Phillip head screws. :22

With the screws removed we wan to gently rock the tail light back and fourth to release the outboard side clips. If you pull that back you can see we have three existing connectors on the back of the tail light. The top, black one, is going to be the one we are plugging our wiring harness into. To separate the connectors, we want to take and press the sides in and pull away. I am going to take the entire thing off so we can see a little better. :47

Okay, we want to do the same for the passenger side as well. Next, we want to take our wiring harness and start plugging it in line. The plug on the harness with the yellow and brown wires are the ones we are going to plug into the driver side. Again, it is the black connector we are going to be using. Take the one end and plug it into the vehicle side. The other end is going to go in the backside of the tail light assembly. But, we are going to hold off on doing that for the time being. What we want to do is take the rest of the harness, which is going to consist of the passenger side connector, as well as the 4-pole end and route them in between the bumper and the body. With those pulled through, we can next take and mount our power converter box here. The installation kit comes with some double sided tape that we are going to mount on the backside here. A good place to mount it is back underneath here where it is going to be protected. I am probably going to mount it on the backside of the bumper here. First, I want to clean off an area in there to ensure that the double sided tape sticks properly. Next you can see we have the white and red wires here that are combined and have a ring terminal on them. We are going to be using the provided self tapping screw and we are going to mount that to the back side of the tail light housing. On the other side, we are going to take the black wire from our power box, and take the large lead of black wire that comes with the installation kit and connect one end of it to this black wire. 2:20

This is going to be our power lead. This lead is going to need to be routed all the way up to the positive side of the battery where we are going to connect it via a 10 amp fuse. Then we want to take the other end of the black wire and feed it through the opening between the body and the bumper. From there, we can go ahead and put our tail light back on. We are underneath the vehicle now. We are going to start with the passenger side connector. I am going to take and start routing it across to where we can bring it up behind the passenger side tail light. We want to keep it away from any possible hot spots or pinch points, there are a couple of fascia tabs mounted up on the backside of the bumper here, so we can rount this behind as we go across. Once routed over we will bring it up through the opening of the body and the bumper, and just like on the driver side we are going to be connecting to the black connectors. From there we are going to reinstall the tail light. Now we can continue back underneath the vehicle where we are going to route our 4-pole in position and also take our black wire and route it up to the battery. Then I am going to tie the 4-pole off here at the trailer hitch. I have some excess wire here that we can use the provided zip ties to go ahead and tie those up and out of the way. We will next take the black wire and start feeding it up to the front of the vehicle where we are going to connect to the battery. When routing the black wire you need to make sure you avoid any possible hot spots or pinch points that would damage the wire. Now we are underneath the engine compartment, what I did earlier was take a light piece of gauge wire and route it from the engine compartment down, so I have something to tie my hot lead to. It will make it easier to route our wire up into the engine compartment. 4:48

Now that we have our hot lead routed up to the battery, we are going to move over to the positive terminal of the battery and take our fuse holder next. What we want to do is take the lead and cut it in half. One end will connect directly to the battery, and the other end will connect to the 12 volt black wire that we routed back from the harness. On one end we are going to add a butt connector, and on the other end we are going to add the provided ring terminal. Start removing the bolt on the positive terminal, this particular set up has it where there is a stopper there, so the bolt will not completely come off. What we are going to do is get it opened up just wide enough where we can get the ring terminal inside this connector here and make our connection that way. To get that ring terminal inside there, what we are going to do is cut out a piece so it will fit around the existing battery bolt here. Now we can take our lead of black wire, you can see we have plenty of excess wire here, so I am going to cut it down to length and then connect it to the fuse holder. You want to make sure we tape up that connection. Finally, you want to put the 10amp fuse into the fuse holder. With that installed our installation is complete. You may want to do a quick check through and make sure you do not have any loose wires. That will conclude the installation of wiring harness part number 56067 on a 2007 Mercury Mariner.
