Today we are going to be installing a 4-pole, part number 118002, on a 2004 Chevrolet Impala. OK, we are inside the trunk area, and we want to go ahead and access the wires that we are going to be tapping into for our wiring harness. Those wires are actually located directly behind the tail light assemblies on both sides of the vehicle. In order to gain access to those wires, we are going to need to go inside the trunk area and we will first off need to remove these three screws per side and then pull back our carpeting. And you can actually see there are two more set screws that we are going to need to remove as well. And with all the set screws removed, I can go ahead and pull the tail light assembly off. As you can see, here is our main wiring harness, feeding the drivers side tail light assembly here. We have got three wires here. We have got a brown with white, which is going to be the running light lead that we are going to be tapping into the yellow, which is our left turn and left brake signal and then the black, which is the standard ground. And then what we want to do is to take our yellow wire here off of our wiring harness, and we want to go ahead and we are going to attach it directly to the yellow wire on our tail light assembly.
We are going to use the quick splices that are provided in the installation kit, and what we want to do is just take the wire that we are attaching to - which is the yellow here on the harness. We are just going to slide that into the first opening. And we are going to take our yellow wire from our 4-pole and slide it in. There is a little stop in here in the inner side, so just slide it in until it hits the stop. And then you just take a regular pair of pliers and crimp down the little metal tab, and that will make our connection for us. And then we just flip the cover over, and our connection is made. We are going to do the same thing with the brown wire - again, the brown and white stripe. We are going to connect that directly to the brown wire on our 4-pole. What we have left are our white and green wires. The white wires are ground the green is going to be our right turn/right brake. There is a ground wire here on the harness, but I would definitely recommend you ground directly to the back side of the tail light assembly here. What I have done is actually stripped off a little bit of the end to expose the wire, and I am just going to use a small ring terminal, slide that directly onto here, and crimp it down. And then I am just going to take a regular self-tapping screw and screw that in behind the tail light assembly here.
Next we are going to run both our green wire and our 4-pole itself down through the opening between the body and the bumper here. I think that what you are going to find with this particular harness is that there is not going to be enough green wire here to run directly over to the passengers side tail light assembly. What I am going to do is just go ahead and get another piece of green wire, make my connection to the passengers side tail light, and then route it underneath and connect it over here with this green wire. OK, and then over here on the passengers side tail light assembly, you can see I have already got it pulled back to expose the wires here off of our main harness. And it is the green wire actually on this side that we are actually going to be attaching to, which also is the green wire on our harness. I am going to go ahead and run my extension - and I have taken another piece of green wire here - I am just going to go ahead and make my connection here on the passengers side. OK, and then we just want to run that, again, through the opening between the bumper and the body. And I am just going to route that over behind the bumper over to the drivers side tail light assembly again, and I will connect it with the other green wire off the main harness. So it is a good idea to wrap all of your connections in electrical tape.
Now we can go ahead and reattach our passengers side tail light assembly. You can see I have got my wire here. We can actually route it directly up and over the bumper brackets, which is going to be a good spot it will keep the wire from getting pinched as well as keep it from getting exposed to the exhaust here, where it could possibly melt. And I am also going to take the 4-pole that we had ped down here on the drivers side, and I am going to do the same thing - just route it directly over the bumper bracket. OK, now I am just going to take my green wire and, again, feed it up through the hole in between the body and the bumper. And then lastly, we just want to go ahead and make our connection here. I am just going to use a standard butt connector for this connection here. And we just want to tape up our connections. OK, and then we can go ahead and put our tail light assembly back on and reattach it from the inside of the trunk. With the tail light assemblies reinstalled, we are just going to go back underneath the vehicle and secure any loose wires that you may have, and that means your installation will be complete. And this will conclude the wiring of part number 118002,on a 2004 Chevrolet Impala.
