Review of the Highway 2 Hitch Bike Rack from Rhode Gear

Today we are going to show you the Rhode Gear Highway 2 bike carrier for 1-1/ 4 and two inch hitches part number RG8015220. The Rhode Gear Highway series is a hitch mounted hanging style bike rack. They feature a tilting upright bar or mask to allow access to your vehicles trunk or rear cargo area. They include an adapter that will allow you to use the rack with both 1-1/ 4 inch and two inch trailer hitches. The built in anti-rattle device helps secure the bike rack inside the hitch and keep it from rattling. The Highway 2 rack can carry two bikes up to 60 pounds total and is covered by a three year warranty. 00:40

Here is the shank of the Highway bike rack designed for 1-1/ 4 inch hitches. Since we are going to be installing it in a two inch hitch we are going to take the adapter sleeve and slip it over. With the adapter sleeve installed we are ready to mount the bike rack on the hitch. Take the anti-rattle hitch pin and thread it into the shank of the bike rack. Once we have the anti-rattle bolt tightened down we will put a clip on it just to make sure that it does not back out. A common problem with some hitch mounted bike racks is not being able to access the trunk or cargo area of your vehicle, there is just not enough space to open the door all the way. Fortunately the Rhode Gear Highway is a tilting bike rack so if we pull the clip and remove the pin the bike rack will tilt down out of the way allowing us to open the cargo hatch. 01:36

The cradles can be moved back and forth on the bike rack arms to accommodate bikes of different shapes and sizes. The frame of the bike is secured with a velcro strap over the top and the grooves in the top of the cradle will allow space for brake cables. With the frame straps secured we are ready to hit the road. If you need a larger rack the Rhode Gear Highway is also available in a four bike model part number part number RG8015221. There you have it for the Rhode Gear Highway bike rack.

Hitch Bike Rack Comparison

Today were going to talk about getting your bikes together with your vehicle so you can go riding. Over here we have a variety of different bikes, the mom and dads bikes, and the kids bikes. Obviously, they have all different types of frames and sizes. What we are going to do here is figure out what kind of bicycle rack works with your type of bikes. To start off there are three different types of bicycle racks, i guess you could say three different configurations. One is the single arm version, on the left hand side here. It is pretty much the original design bicycle rack, not much has changed besides clamps and the hinge part at the bottom. It is the most economical one, for the most part it is the most tried and true piece of equipment. The next one in the center here, is called the two armed version. Basically, it is more stable, has two points of contact on the bicycle rack. It has pretty much been around as long as the single arm version, again it has proven technology, and pretty much there is not much to it except for the width on them. And then the last version is the wheel mount, which is relatively new. It grabs the bikes by the wheel and the frame so you have three points of contact compared to the other two.
