Review of the Chariot CX1 Bicycle Trailer

This is one of Chariot's Child Transportation Systems, the CX1 with the Bicycle Trailer System, part number CH208503. There are three roof layers on the CX1. The outermost layer is a rain shield that will help keep rain, moisture and snow out of the inside compartment. It's attached at the bottom with the hook and loop strip and has zippers running up the full length on either side. It can be rolled up and stored at the top of the carrier when not in use. At the top, youll find two elastic loops to hold it in place.

The second layer is a mesh screen. The mesh screen is designed to keep bugs and road debris out. Chariot recommends always using this when you have the system set up like we have here as a bicycle trailer. That way, any road debris kicked up from your bicycle tire won't hit your child. Also, notice along the front edge, are some glow-in-the-dark panels that will increase nighttime visibility.

The mesh screen also utilizes Chariot's Quick Clip System for attaching the screen at the front to the aluminum frame. This is better than the traditional hook and loop system and hopefully will allow you to access the compartment without waking a sleeping child. It too can be rolled up and tucked out of the way at the top. Finally is the sun awning layer. There are three sections: A tinted visor, a solid panel and another tinted top section.

If you're not using the visor, it can be rolled up and stored against the solid awning. Again, there are two small elastic loops for securing the visor. If you dont need the awning altogether, it could also be undone and rolled and stored at the top. Again, two more elastic loops to hold it in place. You can use any one of the roofs, none of the roofs, or any combination of the three depending on your environment and the situation.

Inside the CX1 youll find a padded five-point harness to secure the child inside. There's a padded removable C-liner that secures with the hook and loop strap up at the top. There are also fleece linings in the corners for those chilly days. At the bottom, there is a removable fleece leg liner also for keeping your child warm. Inside on either side are two storage compartments perfect for holding toys and snacks. On the side of the CX1 is a tinted window. However, this one has two zippers and can be completely removed exposing your mesh panel for more air flow inside. On the side, youll also notice additional reflective trim and piping as well as another section glow-in-the-dark material, again, for more nighttime visibility. On the side of the carrier, youll find the larger 20-inch wheels. Going with the larger wheel helps making going over bumps easier as well as helping keep the trailer tracking smoothly behind your bicycle. The CX1 also has an integrated drum brake system that can be used when set up in the jogging configuration. It will help you slow you down when going over steep hills and it also doubles as a parking brake. Behind the wheel is the adjustable leaf-spring suspension system. This system has four different weight ranges you can select from to help keep the ride more comfortable for your child. This kit comes with the bicycle trailer setup. Theres a new skewer and hitch. This is designed to stay on your bicycle. When youre ready to attach the trailer, slip the ball into the hitch, drop the pin into place, and the hitch is secured. Were going to show you how to set up the trailer hitch and the new skewer on the rear view bicycle. Take your quick release skewer and unlock it, undo the knob on the back and slide your old skewer assembly out. Well take the new skewer that comes with the bicycle trailer kits from Chariot and well install it. Well feed the hitch over the skewer, slide our skewer through the bicycle frame and wheel and on the back side, well tighten up our knob. Now that we have the hitch part installed on our bike, were ready to attach the trailer. Now that we have the receiver hitch installed on our bike frame, well slip the trailer arm in, push the ball all the way in, drop the pin in, secure the pin with the rubber strap down or on the bottom, and then well take our safety strap and we'll go around the bike frame and back to the trailer frame, so that even if this hitch were to fail, the trailer would still be attached to the bike. Now we have our trailer hitched up and were ready to hit the road. The bike trailer hitch arm secures here into the Chariot hub using a pushpin latch. Theres also an extra pin that will act as a safety device to make sure that the arm doesn't come out. With the bicycle trailer kit, you also have some safety devices, a pair of white reflectors to install in your wheels. Theres also a bright orange flag to grab the attention of other cyclists and motorists to make sure that they know that the trailer is there. And finally, theres a third red reflector for the rear. It just attaches to one of the grommets on your cargo bag using a screw. Theres plenty of storage at the rear of the CX1. Up top is a console bag that has a mesh pocket and on the front a large zipper compartment. Down lower on the back, youll find two storage compartments. The first is a foldable storage bag. It can either be raised up and folded against the carrier in case youre using it as a jogger and need the extra foot room, or folded down for more space and easy access. Once you have the set position, close the locking cam levers and it's set into place. The bag uses an elastic line cover to protect the cargo inside and theres plenty of storage space for more toys, snacks, diaper bags or purses. Theres also a large mesh storage compartment for more space and also includes a stitched and hook and loop sealed pocket so you can keep items like your wallet, cellphone, and keys handy and secure. The CX1 can also be collapsed and folded down flat when you need to transport it or store it. You can quickly and easily remove the bicycle trailer hitch arm by pulling the safety pin. Press the button down and the arm will slide out of the hub. Next, we can quickly pop the wheels of. Just take the weight up, push the quick release, and the wheel slides out. We'll pull out our bicycle trailer flag and then were ready to collapse and fold the frame. Theres a red pull knob on either side of the frame that we'll pull and will start the frame collapsing by pulling here. The CX1 is compatible with all five of the conversion kits, the bicycle trailer like we have here. It can also be set up as a stroller, a jogger, a hiking carrier, or a cross country ski carrier. This kit is also available in a copper, gray, and silver color scheme and thats part number CH208503. That does it for Chariot CX1 with the Bicycle Trailer Kit, part number CH208503. .
