Rackem Trailer Tailgate Lift Installation

Installation of a Rackem Double Barrel Trailer Tailgate Assist

First thing we need to do is take the lift assist apparatus and set it on the drivers side railing. Put it as close to the tailgate as possible without interfering with the pins. As you can see we have placed the apparatus on the rail, where there is enough clearance where the pin wont interfere with it, now we want to center it on the railing and mark the holes where were going to drill for the mounting bolts. With the holes marked, we are going to remove the apparatus and drill the holes using a half inch drill bit. Now that we have the holes drilled, we are going to put the lift apparatus back on the rail and the half inch mounting bolts. Now we are going to tighten them down at this time. We have the lift unit installed on the rail here and now we want to put the bracket onto the tailgate.

We do not have to take it out but we need access to get our hands in there to reach the other side of the wiring harness. Watch your hands there are some wires connected to the panel and if you pull too hard you will rip those wires right out. Thats all you need right there to get your hands in there. Might want to get something to pry it open a little more while you keep your hands in there and thats about it. Going back to the passenger side we need to take off the cover panel for the spare tire tools. Also take out the tools so that we have just a little more room to reach the back.

You want to measure down 4 inches and make a mark and that is where the top of the bracket is going to set. Once we have marked our holes we need to drill them out, we want to use a 5/16 bit for this. With our holes drilled we just want to install the bracket using the 5/16 fasteners. Now that we have the bracket attached to the tailgate, we can attach the chain links to the tailgate and the assembly itself. All you have to do is clip this end onto the o-ring on the lift unit, and clip the upper one to the bracket on the tailgate. They have multiple holes here, the heavier and taller the tailgate the higher hole you want to use, and the smaller and shorter tailgates you want to use the lower holes. This is a pretty light trailer so we will use the lower holes. If you take a look here you can see there is some extra slack left over from the use of the lower link you can actually adjust that up by adjusting the chains there. Now that we have the unit fully assembled we will give you an idea of the ease of use. As you can see it lowers itself down more fluidly. Bringing it back up I can actually use just one finger. It takes away a lot of the weight. This concludes the installation of the double barreled tailgate assist part number RA-27C.
