Installation of a VR3 Wireless LCD Backup Camera on a 2004 Volvo XC90
Well begin our install by actually mounting the camera on the lower bolts of the license plate. This does reside on top of the license plate. There is one other note, this comes with spacers that allow you to tilt this up or down depending on your vehicle. Next you need to route this wire up along the edge here, and up to the hinge point and back down to the tail light. What were going to do first is wrap this wire around the bottom. We measured and theres plenty of room between the hatch and the tailgate. What were going to do is slice a little hole here to run the wire through so its not sticking between the grommet. Now well push this wire into the groove and work our way up towards the hinge. This will come off first which weve loosened up. Now well take off this unit and we trace our wire back down through here.
Be sure to leave enough room. The next thing we do is make our camera connections to our wire harness. We need to hook up to the reverse light as the camera is energized when you put your vehicle in reverse. The red wire will be the positive lead and well connect it to the blue wire which weve already tested to be sure. The other wire here will be the ground wire which well attach to a black wires because we know theres only one filament here so power is coming in and the ground is coming out. So well make the connection with the supplied scotch locks and then button it up from there. Give it a good tug here to make sure its connected, then well go on to the ground wire. Well just cut off our ends and extras and well be okay and well protect it with some electric tape. Now well put our light assembly back together. Our connections are done in the rear, now well go up front and hook up the power supply for the monitor itself. Next were going to run our power wire from inside underneath the dashboard. Were going to drill a hole through the firewall here so we have access to the inside. When we do that well attach our power wire to this power supply box here with a constant twelve volts at this point here. Theres also a handy ground. So well use these two points to power our camera and well show you on the inside where to drill out. Before we drill our hole were going to make some room for access, this panel here has to come down and well drill up at an angle at a mark weve already marked out on the inside. If you can see the X in the center there, thats the part where well drill through there and come out by the engine compartment. Now we have our hole drilled out, we installed a grommet to protect the wire going through we did oversize because were running a different power wire through that for a different application. This will work out for us now. Now well run our wire through and make our connections. We have our wires here, now we have to connect them to our ground and power supply. One thing to note is the black wire goes to the ground and the red goes to the power supply on the positive side.
First we need to put our ring terminals on there. Its hard to see but these wires are really fine so it would be a good idea to take them and fold them over to give them a little more mass for the ring terminal to crimp onto. Now well make our connections. Im going to disconnect the positive lead here, then our ground. Put our ground wire on then re-install the ground. When finished well tuck this wire underneath here and then we can put our cover back on. How were going to route our wire is were going to come up behind the panel here beneath the steering column then come up over here and across for our display. To install this display here theres a variety of different options, theres a clip that goes into the air vent here. Theres a stand you can set on top or you can use the Velcro adhesive here. Were just going to stick it on it. Then were going to install our display in this general vicinity right here. You can look through the steering wheel and see all the gages maybe scoot it down a hair so we can see some of the warning lights. Well go ahead and mount it there. Now well get our wire and take up some of the slack and plug it in. Now well the keys and see if the camera lights up. Put it in reverse and you can see we have our power on and there you have it a nice view of the garage door. To show you the operation of this unit its pretty basic, you do have an on/off button and when you leave it on it will automatically come on when you put the car in reverse. When youre done for the day you turn it off and its not using any battery power whatsoever. That covers the install of part # VRBCS335W, the wireless back up system from Virtual Reality Video labs.
