Volvo XC70 Wiring

Installation of a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2011 Volvo XC70

Today on this 2011 Volvo XC70, were gonna install the Curt Powered Taillight converter part number 56146 and the wiring kit part number 55151.Now we have to hardwire this kit into the vehicle so we have to open up the back hatch, to get access to our taillights. Were gonna start by taking off this floor covering, pulling it up and out of our way. And then were gonna remove this cover on the interior here to get access on our taillight. Now this is our wire harness here that goes to our taillight and theres a piece of installation in the way as well so well just pull that out. Itll be easier to get to our wire harness. Now theres a quick disconnect behind it that you have to feel for it to pull it apart. Now what were gonna do is test for our colors using the contacts in here so we dont have to pierce the wire anymore than we have to.

Were gonna remove the tape for the wires as well so we have access to them.At this point, well go ahead and start testing for our wires. Well also take a second to take the Curt Wire Harness and were gonna run it underneath the flooring and up behind the area for the wire harness. Well take the ground wire and keep it outside to be attached to the factory ground right here. First thing well do is well turn on the running lights and check for that circuit. Okay, that looks like purple with the green stripe.

So well move up the wire harness and this is our wire right here. Now you can use a quick connector to make your splice into it however, these wires are so thin, were also gonna use the regular butt connector to make our junction. Our running light circuit on our module is going to be brown. So well be running brown to purple with the green stripe. Well run the two wires together and well twist them and then add our butt connector and then reconnect it to the other side. Double check our connection.

(beeps) Looks like were good. Now well move on to the left turn signal and repeat the same process. It looks like our turn signal is going to be gray with the orange stripe. So well do the same thing for our wire harness. Left turn on the harness is going to be yellow. So the yellow to gray with the orange stripe. Now with somebody push in the brake pedal well check for the brake signal.

Looks like our brake signal is going to be gray with the brown stripe. So well run that to our remaining wire which will be the red wire. Once our connection is made, well go ahead and tape up everything. Alright, now were gonna take our wire harness and plug it back into the taillight. Now lets take our white wire with the ring terminal and run to our factory ground. Well take our green wire and were gonna run that to the other side and go behind our taillight in the passenger side and find our right turn signal.First, were gonna hide it underneath the threshold with unbolt here and here to remove it.Well remove this cover and we can go ahead and unplug the wire harness. Well go ahead and check for the right turn signal. Looks like our signal is going to be green with the orange stripe. So well run our green wire up to that. Now well get our black wire that comes off the module with the butt connector. Well hook that to the black wire and install kit and well run this wire up to the battery. And to run it up to the battery, were gonna run it out the gromit thats underneath the spare tire and poke a hole on it and run the wire through.Alright, well take a second to take the adhesive that comes with the kit and mount our module to this sheet metal here. When we run our wire up to the battery were gonna stay away from anything thats hot such as the exhaust or anything moving like the suspension components or steering components when we go up to the front. Alright, well go ahead and pull our wire from underneath back up and run it to our battery thats inside here. Now were gonna run our wire to this gromit right here that goes into the battery box. Lets go ahead and just poke a hole through it.Alright, next well go ahead and install our fuse holder to the wire harness. Well go ahead and cut it short. Well take the fuse holder and cut it in half. Well have the ring terminal in one end and a butt connector to the other and hook it up to our black wire. Well take our ring terminal and connect it to the positive side of the battery. Just put a fuse into the fuse holder. Ok, well go ahead and replace our battery cover and were finished. With everything installed, well go ahead and show you how to use it. Well just pull out and you go ahead and shut the hatch on it because the door seal is thick enough so it wont hurt anything. Just make sure you stay away from the latch and pull what you need out to your hitch. And there you have it for part number 56146 and the wiring kit part number 55151.
