Installation of a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2007 Toyota RAV4

Today we are working on a 2007 Toyota Rav 4. Were going to install a Tow Ready T-One connector, part number 118412. Our first step is accessing the rear cargo area of the vehicle. If you got any cargo liners installed you want to go ahead and remove those now, and we are going to open up the access panel, and we are going to remove the rear threshold. Okay we will go ahead and set that aside for reinstallation later. Now all we need to do is gain access behind the tail lights on both sides.

Theres a couple of screws that need to be removed and a bolt. We have one more here on the cargo hook. With all the fasteners removed we can go ahead and get in here gently behind the panel and pry it free. We are going to go ahead and do that to both sides. As you can see here with the panel pulled back our wire that runs to the back of the tail light will be plugging in line with our new T-One connector.

Now weve opened up our access to install our Tow Ready connector, we need to go ahead and make our connection. Behind the tail light there will be a plug that goes into the tail light identical to this one. I am going to reach my hand back in there depressing the locking tab and remove from the tail light socket. As you can see here the connections are identical. Again if you press on the locking tab and you can remove it from the tail light socket.

Now were going to take our new Tow Ready connector and plug it in line with the manufacturers, and I will reinstall this end back into the tail light socket, and I will give it just a small little pull to make sure I made a good connection. Now what I am going to do is take the other end, our red and green wire, route it behind the trim panel so we can take it over to the passengers side and repeat the same process. Now before I mount my converter box I want to go ahead and attach my power wire that is going to go ahead and run to the battery. This will just make it a little easier than after it has been installed. So I strip my wire back, go ahead and add my butt connector, and do the same thing to my power wire.

Another wire to go ahead and connect before we mount our converter box is the white wire; its got the green terminal on it. A perfect location for this application is this bolt here that goes right to the sheet metal, Im going to go ahead and remove it, put on my ring terminal, and then go ahead and install it. Now with our wires connected we can go ahead and mount our converter box. Pull back the cover on the double sided adhesive; were just looking for a flat clean place to mount our converter box. With our converter box mounted we can go ahead and reinstall our interior trim panels with the exception of the cover here on the drivers side. With all our connections made and our interior reinstalled in the vehicle we need to find a way to run our power wire outside, so we can run it up to the battery. This grommet here on the drivers side on the lower quarter panel will be perfect. Go ahead and remove it, well make a hole here in the grommet and then we will run our wire through the grommet and out towards the battery. You can see weve made our hole, lets go ahead and run our wire through it. Then I am going to go ahead and reinstall my grommet. Now I will take my new power wire right up to the battery. Things to be mindful of when running your power wire is to stay away from moving components such as suspension that can pinch or damage the wire, or excessive heat such as the exhaust because it too can damage the wire. Now we can go ahead and pull our wire up from underneath, once we have it in the engine compartment we will go ahead and tie it off, use one of our black zip ties that comes in our installation kit, and zip tie it off. Now that weve got it up and secure, we are going to go ahead and route it over to the battery. I am going to route it around the battery over to the positive battery terminal, but before I make my connection I am going to go ahead and add my fuse holder. Clip off any extra, strip back our wire, and we can add our butt connector. Now we can go ahead and prep our fuse holder. Go ahead and cut it in half, strip back both ends, on one side we will go ahead and add our ring terminal that we will attach to the battery, and on the inside we will install it to our butt connector to our power wire. With that completed we can go ahead and make the connection to our battery before we install the fuse. With our power wire installed we could go ahead and add our fuse. I will use a couple of zip ties here just to secure my wire, and that completes the install of our new Tow Ready connector now lets go ahead and show you how to use it. When we need to use our new four pole connection, well simply open the compartment door, route our four pole connector out towards the center of the vehicle, and then we can go ahead and close the door on it as the weather seal is thick enough it wont harm the wire. And then when weve completed using our four pole connector, role it back up, store it here in the internal compartment, and that completes the install for our new Tow Ready T-One Connector part number 118412. .
