Today on our 2005 Jeep liberty well be installing the Tow Ready T1 connector part #: 118524. Our first step, well need to open up the rear cargo door. This will allow us to access the two fasteners on each side securing the taillight assemblies. Starting here on the passenger side well go ahead and remove the two fasteners and then the taillight assembly. Be careful when prying the taillight assembly away from the body of the vehicle not to break the alignment tabs as you can see here. Next well go ahead and remove the manufacturers wiring from the taillight assembly.
First using the leverage of a flat bladed screwdriver well go ahead and unlock the red locking tab. Then pressing on the connector lock remove it from the taillight assembly. Now well go ahead and move over to the driver side and repeat the same process of removing the two fasteners and then the wiring connector. You can also remove the wire hold down and go ahead and set the taillight assembly aside as were going to do here. Now were ready to go ahead and start making connections with our new T1 connector.
Taking the brown and yellow wire were going to feed it up from underneath the vehicle between the bumper cover and the sheet metal of the vehicle. This will allow us to put it up behind the driver side taillight assembly and go ahead and make connection with the manufacturers wire. Now we can go ahead and get underneath the vehicle and start routing our wires. With our wiring underneath the vehicle well go ahead and take the black wire provided with the install kit, that will be our wire fed from our battery to our converter box. Using the Yellow but connector supplied with the install kit we can go ahead and strip back both the red wire from the converter box and the black wire from our install kit and use the but connector to connect the two.
Next, we need to mount our converter box. To do this well peal back the cover of the two sided adhesive and adhere it to a clean flat piece of sheet metal. Up behind the bumper cover against the body of the vehicle is a flat piece of sheet metal we can adhere to. Now with that done well go ahead and take our white wire with the preformed ring terminal, run it over to the frame using a self-tapping screw provided with our install kit and secure it for our ground. Now were ready to go ahead and start routing our wires.
When routing your wires youll need to be mindful of excessive heat such as the exhaust or moving components such as the steering or suspension. Well go ahead and take four pole over to the center of the vehicle down to the hitch and our green wire well follow the four pole over the top of the hitch to the passenger side up behind the passenger side taillight assembly just as we did here on the driver side. Next well go ahead and take some longer black zip ties and secure the wires to the hitch. Now to clean up my install look Ill go ahead and take a pair of side cutters and cut off the excess from the zip ties. Next we need to start routing our black power wire to the engine compartment. To do this were going to use a piece of pull wire to rout our power wire through the frame. For this application Ill be using a piece of air tube or airline. You can also use a stiff piece of wire, it works just as well. Now that Ive routed through the frame as far as I can go Im going to add a wire loom here to run my wire too away from the exhaust and then up into the engine compartment. Now were ready to go ahead and pull our power wire up into the engine compartment. Again, well be using our black zip ties to secure our wire as we rout it over to the positive battery terminal. Next well go ahead and cut off the excess wire as we need to add our fuse holder. To prepare our fuse holder well go ahead and cut it half, stripping back both sides and the end of our power wire. Now we can go ahead and add a ring terminal to one side and the but connector to the other. Then well take the other end of our but connector and patch it to our black power wire. Once again, Ill go ahead and use some black electric tape to wrap up this connection point. Now we can go ahead and rout the fuse holder over to the positive battery terminal and make our connection. With that done well go ahead and take a couple of black zip ties to secure our fuse holder to the manufacturers wiring. To clean up my install look once again Ill go ahead and clip off the excess from my zip ties. Now were ready to go ahead and install our fuse into the fuse holder. Well be using the blue 15 Amp fuse provided with our install kit. With that done we can go ahead and put the cap on our fuse holder and this will complete the installation of our Tow Ready T1 connector part #: 118524 on our 2006 Jeep Liberty.
