Installation of a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2003 Toyota Highlander

Today on our 2003 Toyota Highlander, well be installing Tow Ready T-1 connector, part 118413. To begin our installation, well need remove the rear cargo cover, the spare tire cover, inside compartment cover; well also remove the panels behind the taillights. With all of our interior removed from the vehicle, well now have access to our wiring. Well need to unplug the harness at the connector just behind the taillight. With the connector unplugged, well feed the brown and yellow wire from our T-1 connector up behind the body panel to our taillight assembly. We can then connect the factory harness into one side of our T-1 connector and the other side well plug in to the taillight.

With that done, well need to make a ground here on the drivers side for the white wire. We use the supplied self-tapping screw and our quarter inch bit driver to make our grind. Well need to make sure that we grind into a body panel. Now, that our ground is made and our connections are done on the left side, well need to mount our module box. Now, the module box comes with a piece of two-sided tape already adhered to the box itself.

Well need to find a suitable location for our converter box. Now, that weve mounted the converter box, well need to run our red and green wire across to the passenger side. At the passenger side, well pass the T-1 connector up underneath the panel to our taillight connector. Well undo the connector and again, plug the factory side of the connector into our T-1 connector and the other side into our taillight. Thatll complete our connections.

Now, when using your harness, youll simply remove it from the cargo area and drape it outside to your hitch. You can then simple close the cargo door on the wire, as the molding is soft enough that it wont damage the wire. You will want to make sure you stay away from the latch, as the latch could damage the wires. There you have it for our Tow Ready T-1 connector, part number 118413 on our 2003 Toyota Highlander.
