Installation of a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 1999 Mazda Protege

Today on our 1999 Mazda Protg, we'll be installing part number 119175KIT, the draw type four pole wiring kit. After opening the trunk on our Protg, we'll need to start by removing the threshold molding from the trunk. To do this we'll remove the clips here and here as well as--it's the same on the other side. A small screw driver works great for these. Now that we have our clips out, we can go ahead and use our panel tool to reach underneath the threshold and pry up. We'll work all the way across the threshold, making sure to get us close to the clips as possible and once they have all been released, we can go ahead and remove the threshold for re-installation later.

With the threshold out of the way, we'll need to remove the clip here and here so that we can peel our carpet back to gain access to our wiring harness and this will expose our wiring for our tail lights, brake lights, and turn signals on the driver's side. And we'll repeat the same process on the passenger's side. Now we've already gone ahead and located our three connections here on the driver's side. Our left turn signal will be the solid green wire, our break signal will be the green wire with yellow tracer, and our tail light signal will be the green wire with black tracer. On our module light, our red wire will be the break signal, the yellow wire will be our left turn signal, and the brown wire will be our tail light signal.

The white wire we'll use to make a ground. Now we can go ahead and make our connections here on the driver's side. We'll use a quick connect; supply it with the kit to make our connections. We'll start by making our left turn connection. We'll use the quick connect and slide it over the top of the factory wiring harness, we can then use our yellow wire from our module light, slide it into place, and with it in place, we'll take a pair of pliers to pinch the metal tab from the quick connect and make our connection.

We can then fold the plastic cover over the quick connect which completes our connection for the left turn. We'll now repeat that for the remaining two connections that we'll make with our harness. Now that we've made all our connections here on the driver's side, I like to put a piece of electrical tape around the quick connects just to make sure they're held in place. Now we're ready to put our ground on. Supplied with your wiring kit is a self tapping screw.

Once we bring the harness up, and re-attach it here, we'll find a suitable location for our ground and if maybe, you can peel it off of the module light harness to find that ground. Once we found a suitable location, we'll use our nut driver in and the self tapping screw to make our ground. With our connections made and our ground here on the left side, we're ready to mount the module light box. Now it does come with a piece of two sided tape already attached to the module light box, so just remove the protective film and find a suitable location out of the way to mount our module light box. We can then take our long green wire from the module light and extend it over to the passenger's side. This will be our right turn signal. Now our pole lead--we'll bring it out into the trunk, where we can then fold our carpet back up to hide the mount. We can go ahead and put the clips back in the driver's side and hold in the carpet into place. Now we're ready to move to the passenger side. We'll run our right turn signal wire underneath the threshold here and bring it up to our passenger side harness. We can then use the quick connect to make our connection to the solid green wire of the factory wiring harness. Again, we'll wrap it in electrical tape. And with our passenger side connection made, we can put the clips back in to hold the passenger side carpet in place. And now that our clips are back in, holding our carpet in place, we can re-install the threshold making sure not to pinch the green right turn signal wire. You also want to make sure when you put your threshold back in, that you leave your four pole connector out exposed in the trunk. And with that in place, we'll simply tap it down, re-securing the clips. And with our threshold back in, that will complete our installation. And as you can see, our four pole harness is long enough that we can bring it out of the trunk, being very careful not to let it impact the latch. The molding gives enough that it won't damage the harness. We can then simply close the trunk and make our connection to our trailer. And that'll do it for our installation of draw type wiring kit part number 119175KIT on our 1999 Mazda Protg.
