Volkswagen Jetta Trailer Hitch

Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2012 Volkswagen Jetta

Today on our 2012 Volkswagen Jetta TDI, we'll be installing Draw-Tite Hitch, part number 24866. Now, we've already gone ahead and removed the contents in the trunk as well as the spare tire and spare tire tools. So we'll begin by removing the plastic fascia from underneath the passenger's side of the vehicle by removing the four fasteners. Now, we'll set the fascia aside as it will not be reinstalled. We'll then lower the exhaust by removing the rubber exhaust isolator ahead of the axle and the two bolts from the exhaust hanger bracket. Now, you may need to support your exhaust before you drop it down.

Here on the exhaust bracket, we'll need to bend these two small tabs up. Using a pull wire, we'll feed the 7/16 carriage bolt and spacer through the excess slot on the passenger's side frame, and we'll go ahead and pull wire attached. We'll now bend the handle nut and insert it into the passenger's side frame over the center hole here. We'll now move over to the hitch where we'll tape the 1x2-inch spacer onto the passenger's side slot onto the inside of the side bracket here on the passenger's side. We'll now need to remove the rubber plug from the spare tire well.

We'll use a utility knife to cut away the coating and the plug itself, first on the outside and then on the inside. We'll now rotate the exhaust bracket out of the way and raise our hitch into place. It would be a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch up in place while we install our hardware. And now when you raise your hitch into place, you'll want to pull the 7/16 pull wire through the spacer in the side brackets as you're lifting the hitch in. We can then install the M12 bolt and washer.

We can then remove our pull wire here on the passenger's side and install our 7/16 conical toothed washer with the teeth of the washer facing the hitch and our 7/16 nut. Be careful after removing the pull wire to not push your hardware back into the frame. We'll now move over to the driver's side. We'll rotate the exhaust bracket back up towards the hitch and install the two M8 bolts and washers. Now, we'll go ahead and tighten up all the fasteners that we have restarted with our inaudible 0:03:19.6.

Now here in the spare tire wheel well, we'll finish removing our plug with our utility knife and we'll install our 1/2-inch carriage bolt and 1-1/2 x 3-inch spacer using some sealant to prevent the exhaust and water from entering the cargo area. Now back underneath the vehicle, we'll install the 1/2-inch nut and washer. With our hitch torqued to specification, we can reinstall the two fasteners here on the passenger's side that were holding our fascia over in place. We can then reinstall the spare tire and the cargo carpet, which will complete our installation of Draw-Tite Hitch, part number 24866, on our 2012 Volkswagen Jetta TDI.
