Today on our 2012 Toyota Highlander well be installing Hidden Hitch part number 87615. This is what our hitch will look like once its installed. Next well go ahead and give you a couple measurements to assist you with selecting accessories for your new hitch. The center of the hitch pin hole is even with the outer most edge of the rear bumper. From the top the receiver tube to the ground is 13 and three-quarter inches. This will assist you when selecting accessories such as a drawbar, a bike rack, or a cargo carrier.
Now lets go ahead with the installation. Before we can install the hitch well need to remove both the driver and passenger side underbody trim panels. These will get removed and will not be reinstalled. With this application the manufacturer has suggested cutout lines if you wish to cut them out and reinstall them. However for this application we will not.
To remove the underbody trim panels there are multiple push-pin fasteners and bolt fasteners to remove. Well go ahead and start on the drivers side and then remove the passengers side. Now with both underbody trim panels removed well go ahead and remove both toe hooks. There are two fasteners for each two hook, one on each side. Well sit these aside as they will not be reinstalled.
Next well go ahead and point out the attachment points. Here on the drivers side there will be two on the side of the frame and three on the bottom. On the passenger side there will be two on the side and two on the bottom for a total of nine attachment points. On both sides therell be multiple plugs that will need to be removed. Next well go ahead and take our half inch nylon tube brush part number 814092 and some spray lubricate and clean out each one of the well nuts.
We do this so that we can go ahead and take one of the new 10 millimeter bolts and make sure theyre going to thread in nice and easily because over time the threads can build up with rust, dust, dirt, and debris making it difficult to install the new fasteners. Well be using the new 10 millimeter bolt and conical tooth washer with the teeth of the washer facing the hitch. Now is a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch in place while you install your fastener. We can now go ahead and tighten them down. With that completed we can go ahead and go back and torque the specifications as indicated in the instructions. Thatll complete the install for our Hidden Hitch part number 87615 on our 2012 Toyota Highlander.
