Toyota Highlander Trailer Hitch

Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2012 Toyota Highlander

Today on our 2012 Toyota Highlander, we'll be installing Hidden Hitch, part number 87452. This is what our hitch will look like once it's installed. Next, we'll go ahead and give you a couple of measurements to assist you in selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 1-1/2 inches. From the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 14-1/4 inches. This will assist you in selecting accessories such as a drawbar, a bike rack, or a cargo carrier.

Now, let's go ahead with the installation. Before we could install the hitch, we'll need to remove both the driver and passenger's side underbody trim panels. These will get removed and will not be reinstalled. With this application, the manufacturer has suggested cutout lines if you wish to cut them out and reinstall them. However, for this application we will not.

To remove the underbody trim panels, there are multiple pushpin fasteners and bolt fasteners to remove. We'll go ahead and start on the driver's side and then remove the passenger's side. Now with both underbody trim panels removed, we'll go ahead and remove both tow hooks. There are two fasteners for each tow hook, one on each side. Once again, we'll set these aside as they will not be reinstalled.

Now, we're ready to go ahead and point out the attachment points. We'll have a total of three on each side in the bottom of the frame. We'll need to go ahead and remove the rubber plug for the forward fastener on the driver's side. Next, we'll go ahead and take our 1/2-inch nylon tube brush, part number 814092 and some spray lubricant and clean out each one of the weld nuts. We do this so that we can go ahead and take one of the new 10-mm bolts and make sure they're going to thread in nice and easily, because over time the threads can build up with rust, dust, dirt and debris, making it difficult to install the new fasteners.

Now, we're ready to go ahead and install the hitch. We'll be using the new 10-mm bolts with the conical toothed washers, the teeth of the washer facing the hitch. It's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch while you install the fasteners. Now with all six fasteners installed, we can go ahead and tighten them down. Next, we can go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. And that will complete our install of Hidden Hitch part number 87452 on our 2012 Toyota Highlander.
