Scion xB Trailer Hitch

Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2012 Scion xB

Today on our 2012 Scion XB we'll be installing the Draw-Tite Hitch, part number 24815. This is what it looks like once our hitch is installed. Next, we'll go ahead and give you a couple of measurements to assist you with selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 3 inches, from the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 11-1/4 inches. This will assist you with selecting accessories such as a bike rack or a cargo carrier. Now let's go ahead with the installation.

First we'll need to remove the manufacturer's tow hook. To do this we'll remove the two fasteners securing it to the frame. We'll go ahead and set these aside as they will not be reinstalled as the hitch will take its place. This will expose the two fasteners or weld nuts here on the driver's side. We'll be using the identical weld nuts on the passenger's side.

Each process we do here on the driver's side will get repeated identically on the passenger's side. Before we attempt to install our hitch we'll go ahead and clean out the weld nuts using a little spray lubricant and a 1/2-inch nylon tube brush, part number 814092. We'll go ahead and use one of our new bolts to thread it into the weld nut to make sure they go nice and smoothly. Now we'll go ahead and repeat the same process on the passenger's side. Now we're ready to install the hitch.

We'll be using the new 12-mm bolts along with the conical tooth washer with the teeth of the washer facing the hitch. It's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch in place while you install your fasteners. Now with all four fasteners in place, we'll go ahead and tighten them down. Once we have them tightened down we can go back and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. And that will complete the installation of our Draw-Tite Hitch, part number 24815 on our 2012 Scion XB..

Questions and Comments about this Video

In the video, the freshly cleaned bolt holes are not used to install this hitch on the 2012 XB. Whats the point to cleaning them out?

comment by: Tommy - 11/16/2012

It was done to illustrate the cleaning process. The holes used on the driver side are occupied first by the tow hook, so they should be clean. You would follow that cleaning process over on the exposed that are on the passenger side. Also note, other hitch models do in fact use that bolt hole such as the Curt 12490. They just covered a bit more ground than they really needed to for that video.

Trailer Hitch Installation - 2009 Scion xB

Today on this 2009 Scion xB we will be installing trailer hitch part number 12490 from Curt. Okay we are underneath the vehicle looking and we are taking a look at the passenger-side frame rail. I am going to go ahead and point out the mounting locations for the trailer hitch. As you can see here at the end of the frame rail we have got three existing weld nuts, and we are going to be using those as our attaching points. We will be taking the 12 millimeter bolts and conical tooth washers that are provided with our installation kit and threading them directly in there.

Trailer Hitch Installation - 2008 Scion XB

Today we are going to install part number 12490 from Curt. And we are going to install this hitch on a 2008 Scion XB. First we will show you how this hitch installs on the vehicle. It is going to install on these three holes that are existing in the frame right now, and they are threaded. On some older vehicles, you may have to clean those out with a wire brush and some high lubricant - or, in worst-case scenario, a thread tap. Also what we are going to have to do is take down our exhaust. Spray down this hanger here with some lubricant and then slide it off. And you can tell we have already did spray a little bit of that. That will lower the muffler out of our way so we can get our work done. And then on the drivers side, this tie-down bracket will have to come off and stay off. And the hitch will go back into its place. What you want to do next is go ahead and check the holes. Run a a bolt in there. Make sure they thread in there okay. Like I said, if it is dirty, you may have to take a few steps and clean them out. And once you get everything started and, you know, make sure it looks good and clean, then you can go ahead and install your hitch at this point.
