Volkswagen Jetta Trailer Hitch

Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta

Today in this 2010 Volkswagen Jetta, we're going to install part number 24866 from Draw-Tite. All right, this is what the hitch looks like once installed on the car. Next, we'll give you some measurements that will help you out in selecting some accessories such as a bicycle carrier or a cargo carrier. From the center receiver opening to the outside edge of the bumper is going to be 4-1/4 inches and from the top of the receiver opening down to the ground is going to be 11 inches. Now, we'll go ahead and show you how the hitch in installed. All right, first step is to go ahead and remove the plastic fascia from underneath the passenger's side of the vehicle.

There are at least torque spits to remove and two plastic nuts. And now we'll go ahead and lower the exhaust. There will be two bolts spotted into the muffler that we have to remove to lower it to get it out of our way. And also, when looking at the bracket, there are two small tabs on the exhaust bracket that we have to bend up to move out of the way for the hitch. Now, we can go ahead and search for attachment points for the hitch.

On the passenger's side, there will be a hole at the bottom of the frame marked out here and there's also a hole on the side of the frame on the outside edge going towards the bumper. The two exhaust hanger bolts that we removed will be replaced with a new hardware. The hitch will attach there. There is also a plug on the trunk pan that we'll have to remove and install hardware there. Now, we can go ahead and install our hardware.

We'll start off by installing the carriage bolt and spacer through the access hole at the bottom of the frame going towards the front and we'll pull it through the hole going to the side of the frame. Now, we'll leave our pull wire attached for now. Next, we'll go ahead and install the handle nut into the same access hole and then we'll go ahead and run that over the hole for attachment for the hitch. Next, we'll go ahead and tape one of the spacers to the side of the hitch and then we can go ahead and install the hitch. When we install the hitch, we'll slide the driver's side mounting points over the muffler attachment then we can raise the passenger's side up.

We'll thread the pull wire through the hitch and the block and pull our hardware through, then attach the rest of the hardware. We'll install a conical toothed washer and nut and we'll make sure that the teeth on the conical toothed washer will face towards the hitch. Then we'll go to the driver's side and then install the new hardware. We're going to hold up that side of the hitch and the exhaust bracket. The last bolt we'll install for now will be the bolt that goes through at the bottom of the hitch on the passenger's side and into the handle nut. Leaving all our hardware loose still, we'll go into the trunk area now and move in to your coverings and get down to the spare tire area and completely clean it out so we can remove the plug and then install our hardware there. Before we install our hardware, we'll go ahead and apply some sealant to the bolt hole. We'll install the conical toothed washer and nut. Now, with all our hardware loosely installed, we'll go ahead and tighten them down and then torque the bolts down as specified in the instructions. The instructions state that the panel for the passenger's side is to not be reinstalled. However, it looks like with a simple a cut, we can actually reinstall it. We'll go ahead and hold it up to the hitch, see how much we need to cut out, and we'll use a rotary cool to make our cut. With the panel reinstalled, that will finish it for our install of part number 24866 from Draw-Tite on our 2010 Volkswagen Jetta.
