Today on our 2009 Toyota RAV4, we're going to install the Curt Hitch, part number 13509. Here are a couple of measurements that will assist in selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost point of the back of the spare tire on this vehicle is 7 inches. From the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 12-1/2 inches. Now, let's go ahead with the installation. We have two mounting locations on each side.
Everything we point out to you on the driver's side is going to be repeated identically on the passenger's side, with the exception of the manufacturer's tow hook that's on the driver's side. Our first step is to remove the manufacturer's tow hook. Before we install our hitch, we're going to want to clean out the weld nuts that were exposed. We'll take a little spray lubricant and a 1/2-inch nylon tube brush, and clean out the threads. The older the vehicle gets, the more dirt, dust and debris is going to build up in those threads.
You may have to take a little more time as the vehicle gets older to clean them out. I always recommend to take one of the new fasteners and thread it up into the weld nut to make sure it will go nice and easily. All right, now that we've got our weld nuts cleaned out, let's go ahead and install our hitch. It's a good time to get an extra set of hands to help you hold it in place while you install your fasteners. We'll be installing the bolts and conical toothed washer with the teeth of the washer facing the hitch.
We have two fasteners for each side. We'll just install our fasteners finger tight until we get them all in place. The rear fastener on the passenger's side is above the exhaust. To make it easier to install, I recommend taking a little spray lubricant, spray down the exhaust hanger, and go ahead and lower the exhaust. This will make it easier to install your fastener and tighten it down.
With all of our fasteners in place, we can go ahead and tighten them down. All right, with all of our fasteners tightened down, we'll go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. With all of our fasteners torqued to specifications, we'll go ahead and reinstall the exhaust. With our exhaust reinstalled, our fasteners are torqued to specifications. That completes the installation of our Curt Hitch, part number 13509, on a 2009 Toyota RAV4.
