Today in our 2009 Honda CRV were going to be installing Curt Hitch, part number 13555. This is what our hitch would look like once its installed. Next, well go ahead and give you a couple of measurements to assist you in selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 2 inches. From the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 14-3/4 inches. This will assist you in selecting accessories such as a draw bar, a bike rack or a cargo carrier.
Now, lets go ahead with the installation. Lets go ahead and point out the attachment points. Weve got two weld nuts here on the drivers side frame rail and two weld nuts on the passengers side frame rail. Were also going to be utilizing the tail hook. First, before we can go in and install the hitch, we need to lower the exhaust, to lower the exhaust well spray the two rubber isolators at the rear of the muffler and then go ahead and remove them.
To remove them, you can either to use a flat-blade screwdriver, a pair of pliers, or in this case, were going to use our pry bar. Now with the exhaust lowered, it will expose the weld nuts on both sides. Now, before we go and install our hardware, were going to clean up the weld nuts and the frame. To do this, well use a half-inch nylon tube brush, part number 814092 or you can go ahead and bend it as needed along with some spray lubricant and well clean up the threads of the weld nuts. This will help to clean out any dirt, dust and debris and make it easier to install our new fastener.
Quick tech tip: I recommend to take one of the new 10-mm bolts and go ahead and thread it into the weld nut just to make sure it will go nice and smoothly. This will make it easier to install the hitch. The new fasteners that well be using in the frame will be the 10-mm bolts along with the conical tooth washer with the teeth of the washer facing the hitch. For the tail hook, well be utilizing the U-bolt and two flange nuts provided with the install kit. Now, were ready to go ahead and put the hitch in place.
Its a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch while you install your fasteners. Now with all four frame fasteners in place, well go ahead and secure the tail hook with the U-bolt and 7/16 flange nuts. Now with all our fasteners in place, well go ahead and tighten them down. Next, we can go ahead and torque each fastener to specifications as indicated in instructions. Now, with our hitch secured, well go ahead and reinstall the exhaust. This will complete the install of our Curt Hitch, part number 13555, on our 2009 Honda CRV.
