Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2009 Ford Escape

Today on our 2009 Ford Escape well be installing the Curt hitch part #: 12060. This is what our hitch will look like once its installed. Next well go ahead and give you a couple of measurements to assist you in selecting accessories for your new hitch. from the center of the hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 2 inches, from the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 16 inches. This will assist you with selecting accessories such as a bike rack or a cargo carrier. Now lets go ahead with installation.

First we can go ahead and point out the attachment points, well have a total of three on each side. Note that this install can be easier if you go ahead and remove the spare tire which weve done. Now were ready to go ahead and install the hardware into the frame as attachment points. Starting with our forward attachment point well install the block and inch carriage bolt using our bolt leader provided with the install kit. Take the bolt leader, feed it into the frame through the attachment point and out the end of the frame.

Then we can slide on our block and thread on our carriage bolt. Then well go ahead and feed them both up into the frame and pull them into position. Now with the driver side done well go ahead and repeat the same process on the passenger side. Now were ready to go ahead and install the hitch. Next, using a conical tooth washer and nut well go ahead and secure the hitch using our forward fasteners.

Well just run these nuts down finger tight. Now with that done we can go back and install the middle and rear fasteners in the same manner. Well take our bolt leader, feed it through the hitch, into the frame and out the end of the frame, well slide on our block and thread on our carriage bolt and pull them into position. Once into position well remove the bolt leader, install the conical tooth washer with the teeth of the washer facing the hitch and then our nut to secure it. Keep in mind that each process we do here on the driver side will get repeated identically on the passenger side.

Now with all our fasteners in place we can go ahead and tighten them down. With that completed we can go ahead and torque to specifications. Now with all fasteners torqued to specifications this will complete the install of our Curt hitch part #: 12060 on our 2009 Ford Escape.
