Dodge Journey Trailer Hitch

Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2009 Dodge Journey

Today on our 2009 Dodge Journey, we'll be installing Draw-Tite Hitch, part number 75648. Now before we begin our installation, here's what your hitch will look like on the vehicle. We'll go ahead and give you a few measurements to help you in selecting accessories such as the drawbar, bicycle rack, or a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost part of the bumper is 1 inch and from the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 13-1/2 inches. Now to begin our installation, we'll need to lower the exhaust. We're going to go ahead and use a strap here.

It's a good idea to hold your exhaust up when you're removing these isolators to prevent it from falling down and damaging it. We'll remove the two isolators here on the passenger's side at the rear of the muffler as well as the two at the rear of the muffler on the driver's side. You'll need to remember on the passenger's side that your exhaust has a ground strap, so we'll need to remove that as well before we lower the exhaust. We'll also need to remove the single isolator in front of the muffler here on the passenger's side as well as on the driver's side. With our exhaust down, we'll now go ahead and point out our attachment points.

We'll be using the hole here on the impact bar for our rearmost attachment point and for our front attachment point we'll be using the hole here on our frame rail. Now, we'll go ahead and take our pull wire here and feed it through the attachment point here in the impact bar. We'll bring it out at the end of the impact bar where we can slide our spacer on and thread on the carriage bolt. We'll then use the pull wire to pull it through the end of the impact bar and out at the mounting location hole here. Now, for our front most attachment point, we'll be using a handle nut.

We'll need to bend the handle nut to line it up with the hole in our frame rail. Now with our hardware in place on the driver's side here, we'll move over to the passenger's side and repeat the same procedure, getting our hardware into position. And with all our hardware in place, we're ready to raise the hitch up. It will be a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch up while you install your fasteners. Here at the rearmost attachment point, we'll need to use the tapered spacers included with the hitch.

We'll put one spacer between the hitch and the impact bar itself. We'll need to make sure that the taper goes towards the front of the vehicle. With the hitch up, we'll take another tapered washer and place it up. We'll need to make sure that the taper on this washer faces the rear of the vehicle. We can then take our conical toothed washer and the nut and thread it into place, making sure that the teeth of the conical toothed washer face the spacer. Now with all our fasteners loosely fit, we'll go ahead and tighten them down and torque them to specification as indicated in the instructions. And with all our hardware torqued to specification, we can now go ahead and reinstall our exhaust. Remember to reinstall the ground strap here on the passenger's side. And that will complete our installation of Draw-Tite Hitch, part number 75648 on our 2009 Dodge Journey.
