Today on our 2008 Ford Edge, we'll be installing Draw-Tite Hitch, part number 36447. Now before we begin our installation, here is what your hitch will look like on the vehicle. We'll go ahead and give you a few measurements to help you in selecting accessories such as a drawbar, a bike rack, or a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost part of the bumper is 5 inches and from the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 13-1/2 inches. Now, let's go ahead with our install. Now to begin our installation, we'll need to lower the exhaust system at the three rubber isolators.
There are two here on the mufflers as well as one here just forward of the mufflers here at the Y in the exhaust. Now to make this a little easier, we'll go ahead and spray the isolators down with a spray lubricant. We can then remove them with a simple pry bar. Now before removing the forward isolator, you want to put a strap underneath the exhaust to hold the exhaust up. This will help prevent damage to your exhaust system.
Now that our exhaust is lowered, we can go ahead and remove both heat shields. There are three screws holding the heat shields up as well as a plastic clip on each heat shield. After removing the three screws, we'll simply pull down on the heat shield to remove the plastic clip. With both heat shields down, we'll now go ahead and trim them as shown in the instructions. Now, I'm going to go ahead and hold the heat shield up in place and draw a line to indicate where we'll be cutting it.
We'll need to make sure that we're cutting enough of the heat shield out to leave the holes exposed that we'll be using to mount our hitch. Now with both heat shields trimmed, we're ready to install our hardware into the frame. We'll be using the carriage bolt, the square spacer block, and our fish wire. We'll feed our fish wire in through the mounting bolt hole location and out the rear of the frame. We can then slide the spacer block on and screw the carriage bolt to the fish wire.
We'll then pull the spacer block and the carriage bolt through the frame and out the mounting bolt hole location. We'll repeat this process for the remaining three fasteners on this vehicle. Now that all our hardware is in place in the frame, we'll need to reinstall our heat shields. We'll place the heat shields up and using the plastic clip, we'll reinstall the heat shield holding into place. We'll then use the bolt here next to the clip and go ahead and tighten it down. Now, the two other bolts on the heat shield will not be reused as the hitch will crush the heat shield between the hitch and the frame itself. Now, we're ready to put our hitch into position. It will be a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch up while you install your hardware. Now, we'll be using the conical toothed washer, making sure that the teeth of the washer face the hitch and the hex nut. We'll loosely install our hardware where we can tighten it down and torque it to specification as indicated in the instructions. And with all our hardware torqued to specification, we can go ahead and reinstall our exhaust, completing the installation of Draw-Tite Hitch, part number 36447 on our 2008 Ford Edge.
