Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2008 Acura MDX

Today on our 2008 Acura MDX, we'll be installing the Curt Hitch, part number 13354. Here are a couple measurements that will assist you in selecting accessories for your new hitch such as a drawbar, a bike rack, or a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 4 inches. From the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 16 inches. Now, let's go ahead with the installation. Before we begin our installation, we've already gone ahead and removed the spare tire.

Next, before we can install the hitch, we'll need to go ahead and lower the exhaust and remove the muffler heat shield. First, before we lower the exhaust, we'll pull a safety strap underneath so we can control how far and fast the exhaust will fall once we remove the rubber isolators. On each side, there will be one on the in-board side of the muffler and one on the outward side of the muffler. We'll spray down the hangers with some spray lubricant and then we'll use a pry bar to remove them. Now with the rubber isolators removed, we can go ahead and use our safety strap to lower the exhaust.

With the mufflers out of the way, we'll go ahead and remove the three fasteners securing each heat shield. Now, we can gain full and clear access to the inside frame on each side. You can see there are four weld nuts on the inside frame rail that will be securing our hitch too. Before we attempt to install the hitch, I'm going to take my 1/2-inch nylon tube brush, part number 814092, and some spray lubricant and clean out each one of the weld nuts. Then once I cleaned out the weld nuts, I'll go ahead and take my new 14-mm bolt and thread it into the weld nut to make sure it's going to go nice and easily.

The fasteners we'll be using are the 14-mm bolt, 1/2-inch lock washer, 9/16 flat washer. Now with all eight attachment points cleaned out, we're ready to go ahead and install the hitch. It's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch in place while you install your fasteners. Now with all our fasteners installed, we'll go ahead and tighten them down. Next, we'll go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions.

Now with all our fasteners torqued to specifications, we can go ahead and reinstall the heat shields and the exhaust. And this will complete the installation of our Curt Hitch, part number 13354 on our 2008 Acura MDX.
