Chevrolet Impala Trailer Hitch

Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2005 Chevrolet Impala

Today, on this 2005 Chevy Impala, we are going to install part number 90137 from Hidden Hitch. This is what the hitch looks like when installed on a vehicle. Next, we will go ahead and give you some measurements to help you out in selecting some accessories such as a bicycle rack or a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin opening to the edge of the bumper is going to be 6-3/4 inches. From top of receiver opening down to the ground, will be 12-1/4 inches. Now, we will go ahead and show you how it is installed.

The first thing we are going to do is lower the exhaust out of the way a little bit. To lower the exhaust, remove these bolts here, then we will loosen up this rubber hanger here towards the front of the vehicle. We will also use a safety strap to support the exhaust while we lower it. To make it easier to remove the hanger, we will spray it down with some lubricant first. Now, we have our extra room.

Next, we will go ahead and show you the mounting points for the hitch. There are 2 smaller holes and 1 larger hole. The 2 smaller holes will be used to install the hitch and then on the last cross member, there are 4 holes on it. We use the 2 outside holes for mounting points. Now, we can go ahead and start installed our hardware.

We will install the 3 inch long block and a shorter carriage bolt. Now, the 4 short carriage bolts will go here and here and do the exact same thing on the other side of the vehicle. Right now, we are looking at the driver side. So, we will take a bolt leader, which comes with the kit, pull through the hole we are going to use, then out our access hole, we will thread in the lock and then thread on the bolt and pull it on through. This comes with 4 little bolt leaders so we are actually going to leave this one on there and that will help pull the bolt through when we install the hitch.

At this point, we can go ahead and start installing the hitch. Now, what we are going to do is take the passenger side of the hitch, lay it on top of the muffler while we install the driver side first and then we will go back to the passenger side and install the hardware. On all the bolts, we will install a INAUDIBLE washer and nut. Make sure you teeth are always facing towards the hitch. All right, with this set of hardware loosely installed, we can go ahead and install the rest of the hardware going on the cross member. We will start through the hitch hole, and out the access hole by the frame. We will thread in the lock, and then thread on the longer carriage bolt. Now, with all of our hardware installed, we can go ahead and tighten down the bolts and then torque them down as specified in the instructions. Now we can go ahead and reinstall the exhaust. And with that, that finishes it for part number 90137 from Hidden Hitch on our 2005 Chevrolet Impala.
