Pontiac Montana Trailer Hitch

Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2001 Pontiac Montana

Today, on this 2001 Pontiac Montana we are going to install part number 75278 from Draw Tite. This is what the hitch looks like when it is installed on a vehicle. Next, we will give some measurements to help you out with selecting some accessories such as a ball mount, a bicycle rack or a cargo carrier. From top of receiver opening down to the ground is going to be 12-1/2 inches and from the center of the hitch pinhole to the outside edge of the bumper, is going to be 4-1/4 inches. Now, I will go ahead and show you how the hitch is installed. The first step is to go ahead and loosen up the vehicle exhaust on the passenger side.

Then, we will go ahead and remove one of the bolts with a compressor on the driver side. Then, we will go ahead and raise the hitch into position. We will be using M10 bolts to hold the hitch up. With the hitch secured to the vehicle now, we will go ahead and use a hitch template to drill out our holes. We use a 1/2 inch drill bit to mark the center of our holes and then we will drill it out with a INAUDIBLE and then go back at it with a 1/2 inch bit.

Now, go ahead and remove the hitch. We will allow the compressor bracket to fall down a little bit and then we will go ahead and slip the hitch between the compressor bracket in the frame and then reinstall the hardware. Now, I will move back over to the driver side and reinstall the bracket for the exhaust onto the new hardware. Now, go ahead and start installing the hardware at the end of the frame. We will take one of the handle nuts, bend it into kind of an S shape and we will take our handle nut and install it through the slot on the side of the frame to line up with the holes that we drilled out and then we will install the 1/2 inch bolt and the lock washer from the bottom.

We will do this on both sides of the frame. Now, we will move on to our last fastener on the passenger side. We will finish with our carriage bolt and the square block on the inside frame. Then, we will add 2 more square blocks underneath the hitch and then our lock washer and nut. With all of the hardware loosely installed, we can go ahead and tighten down all of the bolts, then torque them down as specified in the instructions.

And with that, that will finish it for our install part number 75278 from Draw Tite on our 2001 Pontiac Montana.

Trailer Hitch Installation - 2006 Pontiac Montana

Today on this 2006 Pontiac Montana, we will be installing Curt hitch part number 13336. OK, we are underneath the vehicle and the first thing we have done is gone ahead and lowered the spare tire. Get it out of our way. We are looking at the passenger side frame rail. We can go ahead and point out the mounting holes we are going to be using for our trailer hitch. You can see here at the bottom of the frame, we have two bolts holding the exhaust hanger onto the frame. We are going to lower those down and those are going to provide our two rearmost attaching points. And just forward of that, there is a fascia support that is held in with another bolt. And we are going to remove that bolt as well and that will provide our third attaching point. If you go to the vertical side of the inboard part of the frame, you can see we have a hole here. That is going to provide our fourth attaching point. At this location, we are actually going to fish wire a 7/16 carriage bolt, along with the carriage block, into position. 0:42
