Mercury Villager Trailer Hitch

Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2000 Mercury Villager

Today on our 2000 Mercury Villager, well be installing Draw-Tite Hitch part number 36277. Now, before we begin our installation, heres what your hitch will look like on the vehicle. Now, well go ahead and give you a few measurements to help you in selecting accessories. From the center of the hitch pinhole to the outermost part of the bumper is 6 inches and from the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 12 inches. This will help you in selecting accessories such as a Draw-Bar, a cargo carrier or a bike rack. Now lets go ahead with our install.

Well need to remove the two tabs here that hold the rear bumper fascia in place. Now, well set those aside as they will not be reinstalled. We can then lower our exhaust. Well need to remove the exhaust insulators here at the back of the muffler, at the front of the muffler, and further up close to our exhaust resonator. Well go ahead and drop the spare tire just to make it a little easier to clean out our mounting bolt weld nuts.

Well now go ahead and point out the mounting locations for our hitch. On the driver side, here youll see this weld nut on the lower side of the frame and towards the back of the vehicle, well be using the weld nut here towards the inside. On the passenger side, it is identical. Well need to go ahead and clean the weld nuts out as there is probably dirt, debris, and rust built up in the threads. Its a good idea to use some rust penetrant, a nylon tube brush such as part number 814092, and you can also use the mounting bolt included with your hardware.

Once all those weld nuts are cleaned out, were ready to go ahead and put our hitch into place. Itll be a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch up while we install our fasteners. Well be using the conical tooth washer with the teeth of the washer facing the hitch and our bolts in all four mounting locations. With all four fasteners in, we can go ahead and tighten them down and torque to specification as indicated in the instructions. With that done, we can go ahead and reinstall our exhaust and spare tire, which will complete the installation of Draw-Tite Hitch, part number 36277 on our 2000 Mercury Villager..
