Today on our 2012 Toyota Highlander, we'll be test fitting the Thule Vertex 4 Hitch Mounted Bike Carrier, part number TH9029. To mount our carrier to the vehicle, we'll insert the shank of the carrier into the receiver tube of our hitch. We'll line up our hitch pin hole, feed in our anti-rattle bolt and tighten it down using a wrench. Once we've done that, we'll go over a handful of clearance measurements. We have about 11-1/2 inches of ground clearance, about 6-1/2 inches of clearance between the closest part of the vehicle and the closest part of the carrier, and, overall, we've added about 16 inches of length to the rear of our vehicle with the bike rack arms folded down. Now, we want to check for rear vehicle access.
To do this, we'll grab the switch at the base of the bike rack and tilt it down. We want to make sure that we can open our rear hatch and access the cargo area even with the bike rack installed. Now, we'll put the bike rack back up and prepare the load the bike. We'll use the switch at the top of the carrier to fold the arms out then we'll undo the rubber straps at the cradles closest to the vehicle. We'll pick up our bike and fit it over the arms of the carrier and set it into the cradles.
Now, we can come back and use the straps to secure the frame. With that done, our bike is all loaded up and we're ready to hit the road. That's it for our test fit of the Thule Vertex 4 Hitch Mounted Bike Carrier, part number TH9029 on our 2012 Toyota Highlander.
