Today we have with us the 2011 Jeep Patriot, and we're going to be test fitting the Thule Apex 4 Hitch Mounted BikeCarrier part number th9025. To mount the carrier to our vehicle, were going to insert the shank of our bike rack into thereceiver tube of our vehicle. Well push it forward until the self-latching hitch pin closes in on our hitch pinhole. Then welltighten down the anti-rattle device to take out any play between the bike rack and hitch. Once weve made sure our bikerack is secure, were going to go ahead and check some clearance measurements behind our vehicle. Theres about 2 inchesof rear clearance from the furthest point of our bumper to our hand knob.
Weve added about 15 inches overall length to ourvehicle and weve got about 12 inches of ground clearance from the bottom of the bike rack to the ground. Next weregoing to check for rear vehicle access. Well use the hitch switch at the bottom of the bike rack to tilt it down. Well open thehatch of our Patriot and make sure we still have rear vehicle access. Well tilt the bike rack back up into its upright position,and well begin preparing to load a bike.
Well grab the hitch switch at the top of the bike rack and fold our arms out. Wellundo the rubber stripes on the cradles closest to the vehicle and put our bicycle over the arms of the bike rack. Wellfit it into the cradles and secure the bike by the frame using the rubber straps. With that, our bike is all loaded up and wereready to get on the road. Well open the hatch of our vehicleand make sure we still have rear vehicle access.
