Chevrolet Silverado Tail Gate

Installation of a Stromberg Carlson Fifth Wheel Tailgate on a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado

Today on our 2011 Chevrolet Silverado, we'll be installing the Stromberg Carlson Louvered 5th-Wheel Tailgate, part number VGM-07-4000. And with that, we'll go ahead and start our installation. We'll go ahead and review the contents of the product. We have two cables, a set of keys for the tailgate, a plastic insert that will go with the rubber tailgate insert, two bolts, four wood screws, four machine screws, and four clips for the machine screws. There are also two side covers. And with that, we'll go ahead and start our installation.

Alright, to begin, we'll actually raise the tailgate to a 45-degree position. We'll go ahead and remove the cables. With the cables removed, we'll move to the passengers side and slide out the tailgate and go ahead and rest it on the bumper there. With it slid out of the mounting point here, we can just simply back it right off. With the factory tailgate out of the way, we'll go ahead and set our new tailgate up on the bed.

On this particular install, we will not need to use the plastic slide and the rubber insert. With our old tailgate removed, we're now ready to install the new tailgate. We'll go ahead and slide the driver's side into the hinge. With the driver's side slid in, we'll need to bring the tailgate to its 45-degree angle and slide it into the passenger's side hinge. And with the tailgate in the hinges, we can now test to see if our latches are in their correct location.

If your latches do not line up with the strikers on the bed, you can actually loosen up these two nuts and you'll also need to loosen the set screw here. And with that, that will loosen up our lock mechanism here and we can test it and go ahead and tighten everything down, and that will adjust to our position of our locks. Now that our tailgate is latched into place and we know that the locks are all functioning properly, we can go ahead and install the cables. To install the cables, we'll need to open the tailgate. With our tailgate open, connect the cable, set it in place, install the bolt, and go ahead and tighten it down.

With that bolt tight, we can now just hook the cable to the existing mounting point on the truck, and we'll go ahead and repeat that process for the passengers side. Before installing the side covers, we'll need to install the bolt clips. There will be one that will go here facing so that the screw will drive in from the bed side, and we'll install the second one on the lower portion of the bed tailgate and the screw will drive in from the bottom side. With those clips in place, we're ready to go ahead and install our side cover. Each cover is marked. This cover is the driver's side so we know we're working with the correct piece. We'll slide it up over the top and then we'll slide it into place on the bottom side. We'll go ahead and get it lined up. Remember, do not get too close to the bed side or your tailgate will not open or close correctly. Alright, with our side cover in place, we'll go ahead and open the tailgate back up and install our machine screw, holding the side cover on the top. With our side cover fitted here, we'll go ahead and run our two wood screws into the wood posts that are located on the side cover. This will help to hold the cover in place and we'll go ahead and repeat this procedure on the passengers side. Alright, now that both our side covers are secure, we do need to remove the tailgate one last time from the truck and if you flip the tailgate over, you'll see there are two screw holes here on the bottom side of the tailgate that you'll need to run two machine screws, one on the drivers side and also on the passenger's side. This will complete the assembly of the tailgate. With those two screws in, we'll then flip the tailgate back over, re-install it on the truck and re-install our cable. And that completes our install of the Stromberg Carlson Louvered Tailgate for 5th-Wheel on our 2011 Chevrolet Silverado.
