Installation of a Karrite Full-Frame Ladder Rack

Today we are going to install part number 98101 from Karrite. This is their full-frame truck rack. We are going to install this on a 2006 Ford F-150. It does have a bed liner in it and we did take it out to make it a little bit easier access to the bolts when we install it. Other than that, we will show you how it gets installed. All right, we will begin by putting our two top rails together. This will make the entire length of the rack itself. What is going to happen is they are going to fit together like so. When you fit them together right, these two places will be flat. It you do it the wrong way, on the wrong side, they will not line up. Put a little bit sealant around here as you put them together. Once you have them together, you can go ahead and bolt them. And these you can go ahead and snug on down.

All right, next we will install our rear crossbar, and that is just going to simply slide into place. And then this pin goes through it and holds everything in place. This bar is designed to be taken off to load tall objects in case this bar gets in the way. Next, we will attach the front rails to the side rails here. And, again, they will slide together. But on the bottom, there is going to be an existing hole that the bolt will go through here, and there is an existing weld nut inside of here. We will repeat the same process on the other side. Next, we will install the legs on the back of the rack. They will slide in, and there will be a nut on the inside for it to screw into. Next, we are going to install the middle crossbar. You want to install it in front of the joint right here. It does not matter - anywhere in here for now, because we are just going to install it loosely, because we will move it as we need it to fit the truck. Next, we will install the clamp right here. It kind of goes on the bottom half of it. And, again, there is a weld nut inside the tube, and we will just bolt right to that. We will snug it down just to take up the slack, but we will not tighten them down.

And next, we will install the front support arms and these are the ones that go behind the cab. And they just sit against here. And another clamp, similar to the one going for the crossbar, will hold it in place. And, again, we are just going to tighten them down just to take up the slack, and then, because we still have got to adjust these left and right as we need to match the truck. And there is another clamp on top, and we will install that, too. OK, repeat the same thing for the other side. All right, next we will install the bottom bracket that goes onto the bottom of the post here, and this is going to be repeated on all four corners. And also, there are two sets of holes here. The measurement you use, which hole, depending on the measurement on the cab height of your truck, and there is a little chart in the instructions that tell you exactly which height to use. And in our case, we will be using the bottom one. And the angled part will go toward the outside of the vehicle. OK, and just like that, and we will install the other remaining three. And, again, we are just going to snug these down but not tighten them, just take up some slack.

Now we will get to the brackets that get bolted down to the bed rails of your truck. Right now, you can see we have them just temporarily clamped in position. And what is going to happen is, you want to have the bolts here as far apart as possible it makes it the strongest. However, when you put this on here, make sure you have enough clearance to close your tailgate and that you have the rail here as full over to the inside as much as possible. When you drill these holes out, here and here, you only use two of the three - it does not matter, you just use any two of the three combinations. However, when you drill through here, make sure you have plenty of room underneath to get underneath the rail, because sometimes the beds will close. So if it is going to close up to here, that means when you drill it out, you are going to be somewhere where you cannot get the hardware in on the other side. So occasionally, you have to look for that to make sure. You might have to make some adjustments in that respect. We can go ahead and install our bolts now. Go ahead and do it for the rest of the four corners.

All right, at this point we can go ahead and take the rack and install it on the vehicle on the mounts that we just installed. It will probably take at least three or four guys to get it on there, so grab extra hands. The next step is to go ahead and put some hardware on the stud coming out and onto the rack that we just installed. And we do it on all four corners to keep it from going anywhere. And the next step is we will go ahead and just move the rack around and get it straight and square on the truck. I have been setting this at an arbitrary point, and we will try and do it equal on both sides to see how square the rack is from there. Once you have everything squared on the truck, then go ahead and start tightening down all the bolts. The next thing we are going to do is work on our crossbar here. Now, we definitely intended for this to be loose, because there is another bracket that gets bolted on, so we will deal with that next. Next, we will install our angle brackets. They will go between this upright here and this crossbar here. That is why I left it loose, so when you make your adjustments to install it, it is going to fit just like so. All right, we can go ahead and tighten those down, then. All right, and repeat the same thing for the other side. One of our last attachments that we have to do is drill out a hole here and on the other side of the bracket. We will drill it out to a 3/8 hole and attach our hardware. We will bolt in from the outside to the inside. All right, that was our pilot holes, now we will go to our 3/8 bit and we will do the same exact procedure on the other side of the bar. All right, we can go ahead and install our hardware - our carriage bolt will go from the outside in. I am just going over it, making sure I am not missing anything - checking to make sure all the holes are filled in and I have my part number All right, and that covers our install of part number 98101 from Karrite.
