Today on this 2001 Ford Excursion, we are going to show you how to install the rear view camera system part number HM60195VA. The first thing we want to do before we get started is to go ahead and take all of the components out of the packaging. There are three different pieces that we are going to be using here to hook up our system. The first part is our new license plate mounting bracket which holds not only our back up sensors but our rear view camera as well. Inside the cab, we will be mounting our new camera. And in between the two we have this long lead of wiring harness. The red wire on this we are going to hook into the reverse light on the vehicle. Then the black wire is going to be grounded to the vehicle. So we are going to start at the rear of the vehicle and go ahead and figure out how we are going to hook into the reverse wire on the vehicle. Normally you would go ahead and hook in behind the taillights. However, this particular vehicle does have a factory installed tow package and this tow package does have a reverse wire hooked into it. So we are actually going to tap into there. In fact, all of the wires of the tow package up and around, there is actually a disconnect point right behind the license plate area. So I am going to go ahead and disconnect there and go ahead and wire my wires in. So what I have done is actually take the connector here and I popped it off of its mounting clip. And, it is hard to see here, but there is a release on the top side of that. If you press that down and pull away, you can separate the two pieces. Now what I can do is take the wired end and go ahead and bring it out underneath the vehicle so that it is easier to work with. 1:27
So with the tow package plug pulled out, what I am going to do is cut back some of the tape just to expose the wires here for the tow package. And the reverse lead wire that we are looking for is a lighter gauged wire. It is a black wire with a green stripe on it. Next we will go ahead and take our wiring lead off of our connector, the red and the black wires. I am going to go ahead and separate the two of them a little bit. Again, the red wire is the one that we are going to hook into the reverse lead. So what we are going to do next is take one of the provided quick splices that come with the backup system and go ahead and make our connection to the reverse light. The inside portion of the connector actually has a stop in it. So we want to take the red wire here and slide it to the inside and it fully until it hits the stop. We will take the wire we are connecting to and it is going to go into the second set of groves. And then with those two pieces in place, we do want to make sure the wires are fully ed into the groves. So that when we make our connection here it penetrates the wire correctly. We will next take a set of pliers and go ahead and crimp down the metal tab on the connector and once that is crimped down our connection will be made. Pull on the wire a little bit just to make sure it is seated. We will just take the cover then and flip it over the top. And that is all there is to it. Now the black wire, again, it is the ground. Our tow package does have a ground wire. It is this large, thick white wire here. So if you want, you can connect into it. However, I am going to go ahead and just pull back some of this, put a ring terminal on here and ground it directly to the frame. With that connection made and the ring terminal on, I am going to just separate these wires a little bit and go ahead and tape up the connection I made here at the tow package. And then I will feed this through the frame. Before I make my ground connection, I am going to go ahead and start putting the cable in place as well so that we have enough working room as we go. The short end of this that has the wires coming out the end of this, this is the end that is going to be connecting to the backup camera itself. So I am going to go ahead and take it and feed it up towards the license plate area, kind of just leave it loose for the time being. 3:34
And it is time to go ahead and mount the ground. And if I come underneath the vehicle, it is a little difficult to see here but, if you go right above the trailer hitch there is a section of cross member that is welded to the frame so that will work as a good grounding spot. We are just going to take a self-tapping screw and go ahead and mount it in to place. Alright, next we are going to move back to the license plate area and start mounting our new license plate bracket. Go ahead and slide the license plate on first. There are little slits in the sides, under the sensors, so that the license plate will slide right into position. I am not going to mount it just yet. We still need to connect to our cable. What we simply want to do is align the arrows on the two connectors and plug them together. I am going to add some dielectric grease to this connection point before connecting them because this connection point is going to be outside, in the elements and we do not want it to corrode. And I am also going to go ahead and wrap that thoroughly in electrical tape as well. Then we can take the new mounting screws that come with the kit and go ahead and mount our plate. You may be able to use the existing ones that you had had on the license plate previously. But, since this is a thicker set up, they do provide extra long screws to use. OK and then we are just going to feel back behind that license plate area to see how much extra loose wire stiff we have with this part of the lead. And if you do have some excess, you want to go ahead and tie that up and out of the way. We are also now going to go ahead underneath the vehicle and start routing our wire up to the tab area. At this point I have got the cable routed and where I am at on the vehicle is actually underneath the driver side floor board. To save on some of the cable length that we have, I am going to go ahead and take and bring it up underneath the vehicle from here. And if you look here, we have an existing grommet which actually comes through underneath the driver side floor board. We are going to go ahead and put a hole in there and route the cable up through that way. And I will quickly show you how to remove the interior components so that you gain access to that grommet spot. So here with the driver side door open, what we are going to remove is the kick plate here. There are just basic push clips that are holding it in position. So I am going to be using a rivet removal tool to just pop those up. It is the same thing with this interior panel. We have the push clips here and you may have an additional push connector on the inboard side as well. What I did previously so you could see a little bit easier was to go ahead and clean off the undercoating they had mounted over the top because seeing the grommet with the undercoating on there is a little bit difficult. 6:07
And what I am going to do is just take either a knife or screw driver or something and poke a hole right in the middle of it, just large enough so that we can get our cable up through there. And then what I will do is go ahead and feed that cable up through that grommet hole. Go ahead and slide the cable through the grommet hole we just made and go ahead and put the grommet back into place. OK, from there we need to just get an idea of where we want to mount our backup camera. The cable, we are going to feed just up the inside here and bring it up into the top, in the dash area. With the length of wire that we have left over, it is probably going to have to stay over in this area here. So that is where we are going to look to mount the camera. Since a small portion of cable is still going to be underneath the foot area on the driver side, I am going to take the shortest route possible to get it away from there. So, I am just going to take a straight line over and tie it off to this wiring harness. What I am going to do is pull back the weather stripping here. You can see behind the dash panels here, we have a nice groove that our cable will run up nicely. From there I am going to go ahead and secure the wire up and make sure it is not in any pinch areas. And then go ahead and put the interior panel back together. And then the final step of our installation is going to be to connect and mount the monitor. Now again, since we were limited on this particular vehicle with our wire length, I am going to go ahead and set it up over here on the left side of the dashboard area. This dashboard area has an overlapping lip. I am going to go ahead and mount it on the black section, the near most side. The manufacturer provides some double sided tape to use to mount the monitor to the dash area. So we want to go ahead and take and clean off the mounting surface, not only of the monitor but of the dash area as well. And I am going to just be using some standard rubbing alcohol to this. 8:05
Then go ahead and take the double sided tape and peel off one side. Go ahead and mount it to the bottom of the monitor. Then go ahead and peel off the other side and mount it to the dash area. Go ahead and connect the two ends of the cable. And again, we are just going to align the arrows on the cables. And again you definitely want to tape the connector up to make sure that it is nice and tight. But from there, we are just going to hide the remaining wires, make it as clean and as neat of an appearance as we can. The monitor does have a covering image that we want to remove. With the camera fully installed, we just want to do a quick overview to show you how it works. You can see that I am in a parking lot. The indicators at the top are set to let you know how far away you are from the vehicle or object you are pulling towards. Going in reverse, going towards another vehicle, as I get closer the green indicators start blinking and that tells us we are about 3-1/2 to 5-1/2 feet away. Getting closer, it goes to yellow and the yellow zone is about 1-1/2 foot to 3-1/2 feet. And then when we get really close, the red comes on tell you are between 1-1/2 foot and the actual object. And with that, that will conclude the installation of the Hopkins backup camera system, part number HM60195VA.
