Today we are going to be working on a 2009 Chevy HHR. We will be installing Curt hitch part number 11447. Here are a couple of measurements that will assist you in ing accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost point on the bumper is 6- ½ inches. From the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 10- ¾ inches. This will assist you in ing accessories such as a bike rack, cargo carrier, or draw bar. Now let us go ahead with the installation. 0:31
Now what we will do is identify the three exhaust hangers that need to be removed. At the same time, I am going to spray a little lubricant on them to make it easier to remove them and reinstall later. I am going to start with the rear most exhaust hanger first. As you can see this one will actually be easier to take off the manufacturer hanger to the body. Okay, now that we have the one above the muffler, we can let the exhaust fall down. The exhaust will actually hit the axle so we do not need to put on any safety straps. 1:18
Now we are going to go ahead and point out some mounting points. We are going to utilize this slot here at the front of the frame rail. We will be using the rear most hole here in the frame. This will be identical on both sides. On this particular year and model, we will need to drill out the forward most hole to a half inch to allow the carriage bolt to fit in. We are going to take this bolt leader or fish wire, feed it up into the hole and out the slot. Then we can take the block, slide it up on the bolt leader and into the frame. Then thread on the bolt and feed that into the frame also. Pull it forward and down through. That completes the installation of this particular attachment point. Now I am going to repeat this process on the drivers side. 2:23
Now we are ready to install the hardware for the forward most hole. Take the bolt and block again, only this time I am going to thread it onto my bolt leader now, separate the two, work it up into the frame and pull the bolt back through. Now I am going to repeat this same procedure on the drivers side. Now that all of the bolts and blocks are set up we can go ahead and install the hitch. We want to be careful to not push any of the hardware back up into the frame when putting the hitch in place. Go ahead and install the nut. Now that the hardware is installed on the passengers side, we are going to repeat the same process on the drivers side. 3:29
Now that we have all four fasteners in place finger tight we want to tighten them down. Before we do that, we want to push the hitch all the way to the passengers side and hold up pressure on the hitch to tighten the fasteners down. Now that they are tight on the passengers side, I will repeat the same process on the drivers side. Once all of the hardware is tightened down, we can torque to specifications. That completes the passengers side and I will go ahead and repeat the same process on the drivers side. That will complete the installation of Curt hitch part number 11447 on a 2009 HHR.
