Installation of a Front Mount Trailer Hitch on a 2006 Dodge Ram

Today on our 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 we're going to install the Curt front mounted hitch part #: 31320. Here are a couple of measurements that will assist you in selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of the license plate is 3 and a half inches. From the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 12 and inches. This will assist you in selecting accessories, now lets go ahead with the installation. Before we can begin the installation well need to go ahead and take a notch out of the front air dam to allow for the hitch clearance.

To do this were going to get an extra set of hands to help us hold the hitch in place while we mark out the air dam. Now we need to take approximately of an inch out and high. So Im going to go ahead and make that mark. With our air dam marked out Im going to go ahead and use a rotary zip tool to cut out the air dam. Alright, now that we have the air dam cut out well go ahead and get our extra set of hands to help us hold the hitch in place to test fit the cutout.

Now using a can of white spray paint we use it to mark out the holes that need to be drilled for our attachment point. Now, with each of our holes marked out well go ahead and take our center punch and mark the center of each hole and then start drilling it out using a pilot bit. Each process we do here on the passenger side will be repeated identically on the driver side. Well be using the step drill bit process. Now that weve got our pilot hole drilled out well go to a bit larger and keep widening our hole until we to the 7/16 hole that we need to install our carriage bolt.

Now with all our holes drilled out we can go ahead and take the pull wire provided with our install kit and feed our fasteners into the frame. Were using a 7/16 block and 7/16 carriage bolt. Before we can feed those into the frame we need to get our pull wire in place first. Were going to feed it through our attachment point back to the access hole in the frame. First, well slide on our block, then well thread on the carriage bolt.

Go ahead and feed both of them in the frame, once into the frame we can pull them into position. That was our first attachment point for the rear fastener on the passenger side. Now were going to go ahead and repeat the same process for the other five attachment points. Alright, now with all our attachment points drilled out and our fasteners in place we can go ahead and put our hitch in position and secure it with the 7/16 flange nut. Be careful when you put your hitch into position not to push your hardware back up into the frame. Now with all our fasteners in place we can go ahead and tighten it down. Now with all our attachment points tightened down well go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. Now with all our fasteners torqued to specifications that will complete the installation of our Curt front mounted hitch part #: 31320 on our 2006 Dodge Ram 1500.

Next we will give you some measurements that will help you out when selecting some accessories. From the center of the pin hitch hole to the outside edge of the bumper is going to be 9-1/2, and from the top of the receiver tube down to the ground is going to be 13. Now I will go ahead and show you how the hitch is installed. Alright our first step we have to make a notch in an air dam at the bottom of the bumper.

Front Mount Trailer Hitch Installation - 2007 Dodge Ram

Today we are going to install part number 65046. This is a front-mount receiver hitch from Draw-Tite, and we are going to install this front-mount hitch on a 2007 Dodge Ram pickup truck. The hitch is going to mount to the bottom of the frame here. We are going to have to drill two holes out. It is also going to mount to this bottom bolt right here. What we are going to do first is go ahead and take these two bolts loose. They are connected by a strap on the other side, so we have to take the nuts off both sides. We are going to loosen these up, support the bumper, and then put the hitch on the lower bolts here. And then we will hang it by that side, and then we will do the same thing on the other side. We are only using one spacer plate because this truck has the tow hooks already in place. Make sure we put our bolt back in and then put our nut back into place. All right, we can go ahead and install the nut on the top bolt and snug that down.
