Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2001 Chevy Venture

Today we are going to be installing hitch part number 75278 on a 2001 Chevy Venture. We are taking a look at the driver side frame rail and as you can see there are 2 existing weld nuts in the frame. If you have dual exhaust, you may have nuts already on this side holding your exhaust up, in which case you will want to just remove the existing bolts out of the frame to expose these nuts. As you can see here on the passenger side, we do have the exhaust and there are 2 bolts in the frame holding the exhaust hanger on, we are going to go ahead and remove those and it is going to drop the exhaust down here. On short wheel base models, there would be an existing hole here that we will be using as a forward most attaching point on the hitch. With this being the long wheel based model, that hole is not there so we will have to drill it, as well as the rear most attaching point.

Now we will go ahead and remove these bolts from the frame. On these weld nuts right here on the driver side, since there was nothing existing in the weld nuts themselves, we want to make sure we get those nice and cleaned out so the bolts will go in fairly easy. The easiest way to do it is to go ahead and put some W-D40 in there, let it soak in a little bit. Then get a wire brush, or anything small that you can get in there, to clean the threads out. That will make your installation a lot easier. With the 2 bolts out of the frame, we are going to put the hitch up into position using the bolt holes that we just removed the bolts from. As you can see, we have the 2 bolts into the frame and into the existing weld nut. This hole here, we are going to have to go ahead and drill out. As well as here on the passenger side we need to drill the rear most holes as well and again the forward most attaching points as well.

All of these holes are going to be drilled out to a half inch. I am going to start with a quarter inch to drill a pilot hole. Alright, with all of our holes drilled out, I am going to go ahead and start by putting the two inch carriage bolt and block into the forward most attaching point on the passenger side frame rail here. You want to use the provided fish wire. And, what we want to do is, go ahead and run it through the hole that we drilled and up out through the access hole here. We are going to go ahead and place the block on first. Then wrap the threads with the bolt leader like so. That will allow us to pull the block and the bolt into the frame and down. On this forward most attaching point, we are going to be using 2 of the provided block, lock washer and nut. For the rear most attaching point on the passenger and driver side, we are going to use what is called a handle nut and a regular half inch bolt.

The handle nut starts off looking like this here. And this basically allows us to put a nut inside the frame. We are going to feed the handle nut in through this hole in the side of the frame. You basically just want to manipulate the handle nut to where the nut sits down at the base of the frame. And we are going to put the bolt up and through and tighten into it. So I am going to go ahead and manipulate the handle nut now to where I can get it into position, which should be something along the lines like this here. Then we are going to just take that, now that it is aligned perfectly over the hole we just drilled, and thread the bolt up into it. You will do that on the driver and passenger side. Alright with all the fasteners now into place hand tightened, we will want to go ahead and torque those down into position. The half inch bolts will be used with the handle nuts. They get torqued down to 75 foot pounds. The N10 fasteners here that go underneath the existing weld nuts get torqued down to 42 foot pounds. The extra fastener here on the passenger side of the frame gets torqued to 75 foot pounds. This concludes the installation of part number 75278 on a 2001 Chevy Venture.
