Today on this 2009 Ford Escape we will be installing Hidden Hitch part number 70758. This hitch installation will also apply for the Draw-Tite part number 75281. Okay we are underneath the vehicle and we have gone ahead and removed the spare tire for clarity here. Looking at the drivers-side frame rail you can see we have numerous holes here, existing in the frame rail. The two holes here on the inboard side of the frame are going to provide our two attaching points for our trailer hitch and then the hole a little bit forward here at the bottom of the frame will provide the third attaching point. And that is going to be the same on both sides of the vehicle.
To fasten the hitch to the frame we are going to be using blocks and 1 /2 carriage bolts and what we are going to do is fish them inside the frame and pull them out through the existing holes here on the vehicle. We need to do that at all mounting locations. To get the carriage bolt and block inside the frame we are going to be using the 1/ 2 inch bolt leader that is provided with our installation kit. What we are going to do is take and feed it through the hole that we are going to be pulling the carriage bolt down through. Then we will first take the block and feed it onto our bolt leader. Then take the carriage bolt and spread it onto the bolt leader. Then we will come over and take the other end and pull the block and carriage bolt in through the frame and into position. We want to do is go ahead and do the ones here at the bottom of the frame on both the drivers and passengers side.
Then we will go ahead and hang the hitch up and we will come back through and do the ones on the side of the frame. And with the hitch up we are going to go ahead and feed the bolt leader through and put our other carriage bolt locked into position. Okay then once you have all the bolts, nuts, and washers up into place you can go ahead and tighten them down. You can see here on the passenger side you may have some interference with the exhaust, if that is the case lower the exhaust off its two rear most hangers and that should give you enough room to get the bolt tightened down. It helps to spray down the hangers with a lubricant like WD-40 and pry it right off there. And once those are tightened down we are just going to go back through and torque them down. You want to check with the directions to verify the appropriate torque rating for each individual bolt. And now that we have all the bolts torqued down you just want to make sure we put the exhaust back up on its hanger and put the spare tire back up. And our installation will be complete. And that will conclude the installation of hitch part number 70758 on a 2009 Ford Escape.
