Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2008 Honda CRV

Today we are going to be installing Valley hitch part number V82163 on a 2008 Honda CRV. Okay we are underneath the vehicle and we are looking at the driver side frame rail. Here towards the end of the frame you can see we have got one, two existing weld nuts here in the frame. Those are going to provide the two attaching points on the driver side of the vehicle. It may be necessary on some models to go ahead and clean these weld nuts out if they have built up road grime or rust in them. Over here on the passenger side, we are actually going to be using the same attaching points, the two weld nuts. As you can see we have got the exhaust here in the way so we are going to go ahead and need to lower that down off of its hangers.

Remember when moving the exhaust off of it's hangers, it helps to spray the studs down with a spray lubricant like WD-40. It makes the removal of the rubber hanger off of the studs a lot easier. You want to do that in both locations. And then you can just take a pry bar or even a pair of pliers. Just come in behind it and pry the hanger right off. And we are going to do the same thing here on the outboard sided one. Just let that lower right down to where the exhaust tube will rest on the sway bar here. Next we are going to go ahead and clean out the weld nuts. To do that again we want to use a spray lubricant and then we will just take a wire brush, run that into the threads, spin it around a few times and that will help to release the road grime and rust that might be up in there. And we want to do this at all four of the weld nuts.

And now that I have got the corrosion released, I can go ahead and spray it back down. And then we can just run the bolts in and out a few times to check to see if they are thoroughly cleaned. For that mounting position we are going to be using the 10 millimeter bolts along with the conical tooth washers. And that will be the same at all four of the weld nuts. For the tow hook attachment, the half inch hex bolt and half inch nut. Verify that all of the weld nuts are thoroughly cleaned we can go ahead and put the hitch up into position. It might help to start by actually attaching it to the tow hook first and going back and attaching it to the frame. And then on the passenger side you want to make sure you put the arm up and over the exhaust. We are going to let the two tabs here at the top of the receiver tube go up and around the tow hook. And we will slide the hex bolt through and we are just going to have that loosely installed for the time being.

And we will go back and add our bolts here to the frame rail. Okay and what you may run across which I have here, is that when I go to put the bolts in here on the driver side after already putting them in the passenger side and the tow hook, is that the bolt holes are just a little bit off. And the reason that we have some of that variance is because the tow hooks are sometimes welded just a little bit off. So what I am going to do is actually remove the hitch from the tow hook and go ahead and put all four bolts in on the frame and come back and make the attachment to the tow hook. Okay and now that we have got all four bolts loosely installed to the frame we can come back over to the tow hook and make our connection there. With all of the bolts in place, I am going to go ahead and torque the bolts down to their specified torque rating. You will find that torque rating available in the directions. And over here when I am going to put the exhaust back up you can see that the hitch has a cut out for the hanger here on the inboard side. And now our installation is complete. This will conclude the installation of hitch part number V82163 on a 2008 Honda CRV.
