Today on this 2008 Acura MDX we are going to install part number 87474 from Hidden Hitch. This will also apply to part number 75614 from Draw-Tite. The first step involved is to lower the spare tire and we have that done already so you have a lot of room. You can already see the attaching points on the frame. The next thing we need to do is lower the exhaust because there is not quite enough room to work the hitch up in there. So lower the exhaust next and then the heat shields that are above the exhaust, we will take those down too. All of this will go back up once the hitch is installed. For the lowering of the exhaust what we are going to do is put a strap across the exhaust pipes themselves so when we lower them we can do it in a controlled manner so we do not do any damage to the exhaust system. 00:42
Next we will spray down the hangers with some lubricant and we will remove the hangers from the exhaust. We just got done with the driver side, now we will go over to the passenger side and repeat the same process. Now we have got everything loose, just use the tie down strap and we will loosen it up and lower the exhaust. Now we have got some room to take down the bolts that hold up the heat shield. The next thing we want to do is inspect the threads in the frame. Use one of these hitch bolts and we will just thread it in. This is a really new vehicle so we do not have much problem with the threads like dirt and corrosion getting up in there. For instance if you did have an older vehicle it is a good idea to spray it down with some lubricant first and then run your bolt in and out so you can clean out all of the rust and corrosion that is in there. For light duty stuff that will work fine, if it gets really heavy and corroded and full of dirt, basically you are going to use a thread tap after that. 01:44
In this case the bolts and threads are pretty nice so we will just run the bolt in there and just get the dust out and then we will install the hitch. Sometimes it is going to be a tight fit so if you do not get it in perfectly straight you might catch it in a bind. You can probably tap it into place with a rubber mallet if you have to or maybe even tap in one of the corners. It is also a good idea to have an extra set of hands to help hold up one side while you position it in to place. Next we will snug up the bolts, drawing the hitch up against the frame and do that evenly on both sides. Start with these bolts in the back first. On the bolt going towards the rear of the vehicle, it is easier if you use an extension to get to them that way. Now we can torque down the bolts as specified in the instructions. Now we can reinstall the heat shield back into place. We got that in place so lets reinstall the exhaust on the hangers. From the top of the receiver tube down to the ground on this particular vehicle is about 16-3/ 4 inches. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the bumper is five inches. Do not forget to take down the strap. With our spare tire back into place our install is complete. There you have it for part number 87474 from Hidden Hitch.
