Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2007 Volkswagen Touareg

Today we are going to install part number 13220 from Curt. We are going to install this hitch on a 2007 Volkswagen Touareg. The first step involved is actually removing the tail lights. There are two screws on each side of the tail light. We will undo those and then take off the tail lights. We have got the light unbolted, and then we will go ahead and just disconnect it from the vehicle for now and put it in a safe spot. And then go ahead and repeat it for the other side. All right, the next thing we need to do is go ahead and take off the bumper cover. That is going to be from here on down. We will start behind the tail light and then work our way behind the fender well and go on from there. And then go ahead and do the same thing on the other tail light.

Inside the fender well here, we are going to undo these torque screws here. It looks like there are about five torque screws inside the fender well that will need to be removed. The next thing we will do is take out the four bolts that are involved in the bumper here. All right, when you have got these screws taken out, you can pop the bumper off from the side by the fender well. And then do that on both sides. And to completely take the bumper off, we need to disconnect this electrical connection here. I believe it is for the backup sensors.

With the bumper cover off, the next thing I do is take off this steel bumper itself. The hitch actually replaces this chunk of steel right here, so this will be a leftover part going all the way across. And to remove this bumper, we have got four bolts. Remove those, and depending on the size, on some models they are reusable and on sometimes you will have to use the existing hardware that came with the hitch. You will not know that until you actually take out the bolts and measure them. Remember when we were talking about the hardware being different sizes? Well, this is the time to figure out what is going on. When you take these bolts off, this is the factory bolt. If the hardware that came out of the vehicle originally was bigger than this and it should be a 14-millimeter then you just reuse the old hardware, and do not worry about the hardware that came with the hitch only if you get the bolts that are bigger than the 14-millimeter ones.

At this point we can go ahead and install the hitch onto the vehicle. And this is a heavy piece of equipment, so it is a good idea to have an extra set of hands involved. All right, at this point we can go ahead and give the bolts their final torque, as specified in the instructions. Next, what you want to do is remove the old foam top from the steel beam that you took off earlier, and that will just sit right back into place on top of the hitch. And it will stay there just like that.

Now we can go ahead and reattach the bumper cover. First, we will make our connection for the backup sensors, and then we will pop the fascia back on. With the bumper cover loosely installed, there are little tracks in the side here that kind of hold against the body and slide it forward and it goes right in. And then just go ahead and basically start reinstalling the screws that you took out. All right, with our lights installed and everything back together, that concludes our install of part number 13220 from Curt on our 2007 Volkswagen Touareg.
