Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2007 Mazda CX-7

Today we are going to install part number 87421 from Hidden Hitch, and we are going to install this on a 2007 Mazda CX-7. The first step involved is to actually lower the exhaust so we can get a better view of the frames, where you see it mounts up at. First off, we are going to take off this muffler hanger right here, and this is the other muffler hanger we have got to take down, too. It is always a good idea to spray down the rubber hanger with a lubricant to make it easier to slide it off. And from the back side of the rubber hanger, you can use a pry bar or whatever tool you like to push off the rubber hanger toward the center of the vehicle. All right, that gives us a lot more room to install the hitch and to show you where the hitch installs on the frame.

The hitch is going to install in these two existing holes in the frame: this one, and this one. This is actually going to be identical on both sides of the vehicle. We need to get our hardware installed into the vehicle, and what we will have to do is enlarge this access hole right here to get our hardware in. It will not take much. Just to compare it, you can see the block compared to the hole. It might need about 1/16 inch to 1/4 inch at the most to have room to get in there. You can do that with a cold chisel and make a V in it to cut it out, too, or you can use a Dremel tool, which makes it a little bit nicer overall finish.

You can see we have got our notch made out in our access hole so we can get our plate in. And then we will take our wire pull and we will put it in the hole that we are going to pull the hardware through and back down to our access hole. So, we have it like that. Let us go ahead and thread our block into the wire and up into the frame. All right, let us grab this bolt and thread it onto the wire pull and pull the whole assembly through. For the attachment on this hole here, we are just simply going to put our hardware in and pull it right back through. And then we repeat the same thing for the drivers side.

At this point we can go ahead and put the hitch up into position and attach it with a couple of nuts to hold it in place. At this point, leaving the hardware loose, you can still move the hitch left and right. So take a moment and go ahead and center it on the frame and then snug down the bolts. With the hitch centered and the bolts snugged down, we can go ahead and torque the bolts down as specified in the instructions. At this point, we can go ahead and put our rubber hangers back onto the exhaust. And with that, that finishes your install of part number 87421 from Hidden Hitch.
